Since debuting in 2002, “American Idol” has launched the careers of some of music’s biggest stars. But for every winner or breakout finalist, we have also seen some very talented contestants sent home way before viewers were ready to say goodbye. The voting results left many viewers in complete shock. Fans still insist these singers deserved far more time on the “American Idol” stage. We compiled a list of five “American Idol” contestants many viewers thought were eliminated far too soon.
1. Jennifer Hudson (Season 3)
Jennifer Hudson’s elimination has to be one of the most shocking moments in “American Idol” history. First of all, it was the bottom three that had everyone shook. It was Jennifer, but she stood alongside Fantasia Barrino and LaToya London. How could this be the bottom three?
Despite Hudson delivering powerhouse performances week after week, she was voted off in seventh place. It stunned judges and fans.
Of course, she has gone on to have post-Idol success. She has gone on to achieve EGOT status, having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. Hudson is proof that “American Idol” fans don’t always get it right.
2. Chris Daughtry (Season 5)
Chris Daughtry’s gritty rock vocals and commanding stage presence made him a frontrunner throughout season 5. While many thought he would go on to win the competition, he finished in fourth place, a massive surprise to everyone.
Yes, he didn’t go on to win the title, but Daughtry did go on to achieve enormous commercial success. With his band Daughtry, he has become one of the most successful Idol alums ever. Still, many fans believe he should have made the finale and won the show.
3. Pia Toscano (Season 10)
The elimination of Pia Toscano on “American Idol” season 10 sent shockwaves through the Idol fanbase. She was known for her flawless ballads and vocal control.
Many thought she would go deep into the competition. However, she was eliminated early in the competition and finished in ninth place.
This elimination just highlighted the unpredictability of viewer voting. You just never know what’s going to happen when the voting is put in the hands of America.
4. Tori Kelly (Season 9)
Tori Kelly made it through to Hollywood Week on “American Idol” season 9. However, she would not make the Top 24 that season.
This is a notable elimination, as Kelly would go on to become a Grammy-winning artist. She has even come back to be a guest mentor on the show.
She struggled to stand out during her time on the show, but her talent was undeniable. Many fans view her elimination as a missed opportunity for the show.
5. Constantine Maroulis (Season 4)
Constantine Maroulis brought his theatrical flair and rock-star energy to the Idol stage during season 4. Again, he was one of the frontrunners on his season. Fans were stunned when he didn’t make the finale, eliminated in sixth place.
After the show, Constantine took that theatrical flair to the right place: Broadway. He has had success, including a Tony nomination for his role in “Rock of Ages.”
These eliminations are just a reminder that while the show can create stars, it doesn’t always recognize them in time. What contestant do you think was eliminated too soon?

Hello? What about Crystal Bowersox???
