Winning “American Idol” is truly a life-changing experience, and many contestants go on to be huge stars afterwards. For Samantha “Just Sam” Diaz, winning Season 18 set her on the path to a successful music career, but she has also undergone stunning changes in her personal life. From starting a family to parting ways with her first record label, here’s what Just Sam is up to five years after their win.
Just Sam and Hollywood Records Didn’t Go The Distance
GettyAn “Idol” win is a quick pipeline to a record deal, but all didn’t go well for Just Sam and their first label, Hollywood Records. “I thought it was gonna be easy, just go to the studio, record, put out music,” Sam said in a 2020 Instagram Story, as Just Jared reported. “It takes time, it takes money that I don’t have. It takes patience.” The singer ended up in dire financial straits, and her work with Hollywood Records came to an end before an album ever hit the shelves.
In 2023, TV Insider revealed that Sam had returned to her roots as a subway singer. Instagram videos posted around that time show that her talent is still alive and well. In 2024, Just Sam also made a triumphant return to the “American Idol” stage, delivering her first live performance on the series since their 2020 win.
The Singer Became a Mother in 2025
GettySam may have returned to subway singing, but she has also started an exciting new life chapter. In August 2025, the singer took to Instagram to announce the birth of her first child. “I am so grateful that I was able to bring my child into this world with my grandmother by my side,” the singer captioned the post. “Her being there definitely made this moment even more special for me.”
When she originally announced the pregnancy, the singer shared that she never thought being a mother would happen. “I was told at just 20 years old that I may not be able to carry children of my own or that I may have to try IVF in order to have a successful pregnancy/birth,” she explained on Instagram. A few months later, Sam posted another photo of herself looking stunning in an orange suit with the caption, “She’s a mother!” Although the singer has chosen to keep her new baby off social media and hasn’t shared many details of the birth with fans, she appears to be enjoying parenthood.
