The “Dawson’s Creek” alum, 48, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, three years after bravely battling colorectal cancer. His wife confirmed the news of his passing in an emotional statement on social media.

In his tribute, Derek wrote: “My heart is heavy hearing about James’ passing. I immediately thought of this video he shared, it moved me to tears the first time I saw it, and it moves me even more now.”
Hough said he felt compelled to honor Van Der Beek’s memory by resharing the clip. “I wanted to honor his memory by sharing.”
Hough also reflected on the character and strength Van Der Beek displayed during his public battle with cancer.
“What a wise, thoughtful, loving man. Thank you, James, for your courage, your strength, and for sharing your light even in your darkest moments.”
