Week 5 Begins

The judges are in place as the Season 16 home cooks arrive in the kitchen. We have the first head-to-head battle tonight on “MasterChef.”

For the first phase of this competition, they will be cooking alongside their regional teammates. They will each be responsible for cooking a dish, but the judges will taste the best dishes from each region. If their dish wins the best dish, then they will win a MasterChef Immunity Pin, which keeps them safe for the next challenge. It will also keep the rest of their team safe from elimination tonight. The judges will also taste the three worst dishes for the night, and one home cook will be eliminated.

First Challenge

For this first challenge, they will have 60 minutes to cook an elevated dish that is inspired by stadium food. These dishes must be infused with their own cultural flair, so people know the dish is from your region.

The time starts, and the home cooks invade the pantry, which is very chaotic. The home cooks return to their stations and get started on their dishes.

The judges head out to chat with the home cooks. The home cooks are definitely making dishes linked to their regions, so it’s interesting to see. Nora wasn’t sure how she was elevating her dish, which may be an issue. She is all over the place and chaotic. She then cuts her finger and needs a medic.

Cooking Time on ‘MasterChef’ Season 16

The home cooks are definitely feeling the pressure and stressed. However, the cooking continues.

Nora continues to be a mess, as she has a lot going on with her dish. She then has her band-aid fall off from her cut, so she has medics apply another one. Meanwhile, Julia burned her pancetta and is not sure if she has enough time to restart them.

We are down to the final 15 minutes. Shompa is making fried chicken thighs, which Joe said are thick and will need a while to cook, but also time to rest afterwards. Tiffany reminds Peter that his duck in the auditions needed more spice, so he said this dish will have the spice she’s looking for.

The time is winding down, so the home cooks are trying to get finished and get their dishes plated. The time runs out, so no more changes are allowed.

Tasting & Results Time

The judges take a walk around the room to take a closer look at these plates on “MasterChef” season 16. After inspecting all of the dishes, the judges will highlight the best dish from each region:

  • Aishu (Asia-Pacific) – Gordon said it looks delicious and it’s elevated. It’s delicious. She has it absolutely nailed. She’s on the money. Joe liked the coconut chutney. It’s a great balance between sweet and savory. Tiffany said it’s a snack she would gladly indulge in.
  • Aghata (Europe) – Joe said the ratio is just right. Tiffany said the potatoes are perfectly cooked. Flavorwise,m it’s banging. Gordon said the tortilla is cooked beautifully. It’s a labor of love. Joe said she elevated such a common dish so well done.
  • Peter (Africa) – Tiffany said she loves the look of all of it. Gordon said the chicken tenders are delicious and beautifully seasoned. The sauces help elevate it. Tiffany said you really smell the spices, and she likes this dish. Joe said it’s great to do something simple, but do it elevated.
  • Tkaiya (The Americas) – Tiffany said she loves that they are golden brown. The dough is buttery and crisp. She likes all the sauces and flavors. Gordon said the spice is delicious on it. Joe said it could have used more filling, but the crust is so good on its own that he didn’t mind it.

Results: The judges take some time to discuss the top dishes. All four of these home cooks are safe from elimination tonight on “MasterChef” season 16. The winning dish goes to Aishu, who wins immunity for Asia-Pacific tonight, and she’ll have an incredible advantage next week.

Worst Dishes of the Evening

Asia-Pacific has immunity, but Gordon said they are lucky, as Shompa had one of the worst dishes of the night, and Aishu saved her. The worst dishes of the night from each territory belong to:

  • Julia (Europe) – Joe said the polenta fries look undercooked and the pancetta looks burnt. Gordon said the flavor of the polenta tastes great, but poor execution. Tiffany said overall, she doesn’t fully see the vision. Sometimes you just have to start over. Joe said the execution fell short on every level.
  • Jake (The Americas) – Gordon said everything looks dark on the plate, and visually, it does not look as appetizing as it sounds. The steak is medium, heading to medium-well. The sauces are delicious, and everything is there. The tortillas are overdone. He’s overthinking it. Tiffany said he needs to put that time back into the protein. Joe said they love his ideas, but he can’t trip over the details.
  • Nora (Africa) – Gordon said he has had the traditional dish she is talking about, and it doesn’t look like this. Their mouths aren’t that wide to take a bite of it. Joe said the deconstruction of the dish literally deconstructs the dish. Gordon said your version is confusing; it’s like three dishes going into one. Well, as Gordon was talking, it looks like Tiffany found that band-aid! Yup, it was in the sandwich! Tiffany said she is done and doesn’t know where to go from here. There are a lot of things wrong with the dish already, but then to find a band-aid?

Results: The judges discussed, but it didn’t take much discussion. Jake and Julia are thanking Nora for that band-aid mistake, as she is eliminated tonight on “MasterChef” season 16.
