While appearing on “The Jennifer Hudson Show” on October 9, 2025, Robinson Peete talked about her “Sesame Street” fail, which stemmed from her dad — Matt Robinson — playing the original Gordon on the iconic children’s show.
Joking that there was definitely no “nepotism” involved, Robinson Peete said every kid in their Philadelphia neighborhood but her seemed to be appearing on the PBS series, which debuted in 1969.
During her interview, the “Holiday Heritage” actress told Hudson, “I finally got on, I got one line. I was supposed to say, ‘Hi, Gordon.’ No, I said, ‘Hi, Daddy.'”
Hudson and her audience all let out a huge “awwww” and Robinson Peete quipped, “I’ve been in therapy ever since!”
Though she may not have shone her brightest on “Sesame Street,” Robinson Peete said, “That show has just been so iconic and it just is awesome that he was part of that legacy.”

Robinson Peete has shared about how proud she is of her dad’s contributions to “Sesame Street” and other iconic shows, including writing about him in a 2023 social media post during the WGA writers’ strike.
“My late father Matt Robinson was a proud & prolific WGA writer,” she tweeted at the time. “He wrote for Sesame Street (since Oscar was Orange!), Captain Kangaroo, The Waltons, Eight Is Enough, The Jeffersons, Sanford & Son and the Cosby Show and more-as well as several books, plays and screenplays… His residuals kept him going between jobs…especially when he got diagnosed with young onset Parkinson’s disease at 48 in the prime of his career.”
While filming the Hallmark reality show “Meet the Peetes,” cameras followed Robinson Peete and her brother as they returned to the set of “Sesame Street” in 2019, marking the show’s 50th anniversary by hanging out with Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Grover, and more.
“I am experiencing so many different emotions being here in this studio,” she told producers. “I just feel so overcome with emotion because of the pride that I have in the fact that the show’s still on, and that the show’s still so much like the original episodes. I just wish my dad could be here to see all this.”
Matt Robinson died at age 65 in 2002, due to complications from Parkinson’s Disease, per the New York Times.
