For Hallmark star Jonathan Bennett, the bond created between B.J. Britt, Tyler Hynes, and him on “The Groomsmen” trilogy was real. Their closeness and camaraderie didn’t just happen onscreen, but behind the scenes, as well.
“B.J. and Tyler, who are my co-stars — who are the groomsmen — we have such good chemistry, and we laugh so much on set,” Bennett told KCAL News. ” And when you watch the movie, when you watch all three movies, it’s like you’re watching lightning in a bottle. Like it’s chemistry like I’ve never seen before on-camera between guys.”
HallmarkThe films are now coming to the Hallmark Channel on September 6, a year after debuting on Hallmark+. Bennett, who revealed that they’re hoping “The Groomsmen” marks the beginning of a franchise, believes their unique take on the traditional rom-com will resonate with fans.
‘The Groomsmen’ is Shaking Up Hallmark’s Love Stories
“The Groomsmen” is divided into three films, each focusing on one of the friends. “First Look” is about a pediatrician (Britt), finding long-distance love with a doctor (Heather Hemmens). “Second Chances” deals with a baseball coach (Bennett) realizing that he’s in love with his best friend, played by Alexander Lincoln. The final film, “Last Dance,” centers on Hynes’ character, who falls in love after moving to Italy to be near his daughter.
In his interview with KCAL, Jonathan Bennett explained what makes “The Groomsmen” so remarkable.
“For the first time ever, we’re seeing a rom-com, especially a rom-com trilogy, on Hallmark Channel through the male perspective,” he said. “Usually, it’s always female-driven; we’re following the girl’s point of view. This is following the guy’s point of view. So it’s a little bit of a bromance.”
Hallmark“We wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something that wasn’t the norm of what you saw on the Hallmark Channel, but was still the same thing and tropes that you want,” he clarified. “So, it follows the formula; you’re just seeing the formula from a different point of view. So I think that’s what makes these movies so special.”
‘The Groomsmen’ Won Hearts and GLAAD Award
“The Groomsmen” is distinctive from other Hallmark films for its focus on love from a man’s point of view. However, Bennett’s film is also notable for its portrayal of a same-sex couple getting married.
Hallmark“What I’m so proud of with this series is that in the second installment of ‘The Groomsmen’ — ‘The Groomsmen Second Chances’ — the movie that I’m the lead of, it’s the first time that we’ve had a same-sex wedding in a Hallmark movie,” he said, proudly. “So it’s groundbreaking, and we actually won the GLAAD Award last year for best movie. So, it was really fun to tell that story, and to get recognized for it, because we did it in such an authentic way, and I think it shows in the film.”
