Kevin McGarry & Erin Krakow Hint at Big Changes Ahead for Nathan and Elizabeth

Ahead of the premiere of Hallmark’s “When Calls the Heart” season 13, stars Kevin McGarry and Erin Krakow revealed some teasers about what lies ahead.

Krakow and McGarry’s characters, Nathan and Elizabeth, travel to get care for Little Jack, and they stay with her former mother-in-law, Charlotte Thornton.

Brooke Shields returns to play Charlotte after a decade away from “When Calls the Heart,” and it seems she plays a powerful role in what happens in this next chapter for Nathan and Elizabeth.

Kevin McGarry’s Character Takes on a Big Role for Elizabeth & Little Jack in Season 13

On December 29, McGarry and Krakow talked with Swooon about the upcoming season. Nathan and Elizabeth, along with Allie and Little Jack, could find things awkward staying at the boarding house that Charlotte runs. However, the experience proves to be quite valuable for them as Nathan and Charlotte bond.

Krakow shared that Nathan being a rock for Elizabeth during this tough season of their lives will be “very much on display” throughout season 13 of “When Calls the Heart.”

McGarry noted that Nathan will be very present in helping Elizabeth with Little Jack and the medical care he needs. He said, “I think they’ve really kind of, without making anything official, stepped into this family zone with everyone helping out.”

He acknowledged that “When the Heart Calls” viewers will see Nathan and Elizabeth navigating “new trials and tribulations” throughout season 13. As they have in the past, they’ll lean on one another as they deal with what’s ahead.

McGarry teased that Nathan and Elizabeth’s dynamic will be “really tested this year.” He pointed out that as they have in the past, Elizabeth and Nathan will continue to lean on one another to get through everything.

In addition, he shared, viewers will “see them step into new roles for each other” as this new season of life challenges them.

Elizabeth Has a ‘New Confidence’ in the WCTH Season Ahead

Krakow also told Swooon there’s a “different, more confident side of Elizabeth” that comes out in season 13.

“Elizabeth knows how she feels about Nathan, and she knows what he brings to the table, not just as a partner to her, but as a father figure to Little Jack,” Krakow said.

She also explained, “We don’t spend too much time seeing an insecure or questioning Elizabeth.”

In the past, it would have been somewhat expected to see Elizabeth worry about how Charlotte would handle Nathan being in the picture.

However, this new Elizabeth doesn’t let that concern her much. Krakow said she thought it was “really nice” to see. She added, “It was a different, more confident side of Elizabeth.”

  1. So we’re really gonna keep glossing over the fact that Nathan’s incompetence killed Jack huh? We’re just supposed to believe Elizabeth is just okay with him raising her son when he took her husband and Little Jack’s father away? This is why I gave up on this show

  2. Nathan certainly didn’t cause Jack’s death but he was a part of the circumstances leading up to it. Realistically Elizabeth should have been told the whole story by the RCMP and definitely Nathan should have told her the truth immediately. He kept it from her for years. That shows he felt guilty and it was cowardly not telling her right away. Bill too. Also why didn’t he give her the pension cheque right away? He obviously was ashamed to meet her and it was her that had to make the first move. Their whole introduction was totally opposite of Elizabeth and Lucas’s first cute meeting in front of the saloon. They were flirting with each other and obviously attracted to each other.

    • If you watch the S6 version that contains all the deleted Abigail scenes, the first thing Nathan did after meeting Abigail was ask where he could find Elizabeth (probably so he could give her the pension check). Nathan & Elizabeth’s meet cute had ALL the feels… misty eyes one moment, sharing advice and laughing the next. And it was much longer & more meaningful than Lucas trying to hire Elizabeth as a saloon girl IMO. (Lucas was the only one ‘flirting’ and he did that with Clara also… leading to Jesse trying to punch him.)

I think Nathan fans watch the show through his point of view, while Lucas fans watch through his point of view… but we should all try to watch from Elizabeth’s perspective since it’s really HER story.

  3. Nathan had a difficult choice between letting cattle rustlers escape across the border or catching them himself. Bill & Jack probably would have done the exact same thing. According to ‘canon’ on the show, Nathan is impeccable, selfless, honorable & kind.

I’m excited to see what question Nathan *mustache* Elizabeth in S13!

  4. It’s very tiring to see this same small group of petty individuals try to besmirch the Nathan character because the are still sore about the change in storylines that revitalized the series. I’m glad the writers and producers (along with Hallmark) are smart enought to hit the ignore button!

    • It’s really sad they don’t have anything better to do. Find a new show to enjoy… a new hobby… something. Must be exhausting to be this bitter and negative after THREE YEARS!

Thankfully the writers, producers and Hallmark seem to be ‘all in’ with the N+E endgame. Excited to see what happens in Season 13! (They sure seem to be hinting at an engagement!)
