Ahead of Tamera Mowry-Housley’s latest “Haunted Harmony Mysteries” film for Hallmark Channel, she has been opening up about her character, Gethsemane Brown, and how she can relate to her.
Tamera Mowry-Housley Reveals Connection With Her Late Niece
In an interview with Parade, published Saturday, September 5, Mowry-Housley said she believes loved ones can communicate after they have passed. Her character, Brown, can see and hear ghosts, and Mowry-Housley said she had similar experiences. “I truly believe that our loved ones do, you know, send us these signs,” she said. “And I believe that God sends us these signs to just let us know that our loved ones are okay.”
Mowry-Housley tragically lost her niece, Alaina, on November 7, 2018, when she was killed in a mass shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California. She was just 18-years-old at the time of her death. “There was this song that she absolutely loved, and I used to always play it when I would fly because it brought me peace. I remember I was shooting a film, and I had this (music) playlist, I was having a challenging morning, and I was getting ready. I like to put on my music, and I pressed a playlist,” she recalled.
Mowry-Housley, who competed in “The Masked Singer” and has appeared on HGTV’s “The Housleys” and the reality docu-series “Tia & Tamera” with her twin, Tia Mowry, shared how she felt when she heard the song. “That song came on, and it was not a part of my playlist. So it’s just little things like that, you know?” she said.

The actress felt Alaina’s presence, but she believes the film franchise also highlights the connection between the living and loved ones who have passed. “Those are the special moments that I think our audience really resonates with,” she said. “There’s always that heart(felt) moment at the end when you have these characters sense and feel each other, and say their final goodbyes. And no matter how many times we shoot it, even if it doesn’t call for me to cry, I’m literally over there crying!”
The former child star and “Sister, Sister” alum has spoken about her niece on multiple occasions, including sharing photos of her on social media. On the anniversary of Alaina’s death in 2023, Mowry-Housley posted a photo on Instagram of her and expressed how much she missed her. “We think of you daily. We miss you immensely. We love you. Forever,” she wrote.
Mowry-Housley’s husband, Adam Housley, has also honored his Alaina with tributes on social media, including one on November 8, 2018, the day after her passing. “I really don’t know what to say other than I love this girl with all my heart and I’d give my life right now for a miracle,” he wrote on Instagram.
Fans flooded the post with heartfelt tributes, sending the family their condolences. “My condolences and may she rest in peace!” a comment reads. “So sorry Mr. & Mrs. Housley God be with you in perfect peace and care. Amen,” another fan wrote.
