Jenn Todryk is keeping it real about the challenges of being an influencer. On the latest episode of the “You, Me & Mike” podcast, the former HGTV star and her husband talk about her career as an influencer and some of the pitfalls.
Jenn Todryk Shares Perspective on Influencer Fatigue
On the April 22 episode of the “You, Me & Mike” podcast, the couple discussed the job of influencers.
“Are we all just … tired of influencers? In this episode of ‘You, Me & Mike,’ we unpack the growing phenomenon of influencer fatigue and why audiences are feeling burned out, skeptical, and even distrustful,” the show synopsis explains.
“But we’ll also challenge the narrative, exploring how a handful of questionable tactics have shaped public perception and why it’s unfair to paint all influencers with the same brush,” the summary notes. “We’ll explore the reasons why audience trust has been eroded, but also why it’s important not to believe everything you read about influencers online. Join us for an emotional deep dive into the world of influencing, from the perspective of an influencer who has the best community on the internet!”
During the podcast, Todryk noted, “It’s a weird thing to feel and assess because I’ve been in the space for a long time. I think most people would say I’m an influencer and I used to be like, ‘No I’m not,’ and I don’t say that anymore because it just makes me look stupid. I am aware that I’m in that genre, but I started before it was a word and a job and a thing.”
“And I’ve seen this crazy evolution of what this hobby and fun outlet has become,” she explained.
“Influencer fatigue is a huge thing right now where people are just over influencers,” the former HGTV star shared. “It’s bad. Like I don’t want to be associated with it, but yet it’s my job — it’s become that because of me starting back in 2015. And it all started with me being a stay-at-home mom and sharing my story.”
Todryk continued, “It’s such a weird place for me to be in because I feel like I don’t relate to what it’s become and I miss what it was, in a weird way. But I still do it because I still love it and I still try to do it the way that I’ve always done it.”
She went on to explain how her initial entry into sharing her life on a mom blog wasn’t a job because “no one was doing it yet … It was a hobby.”
Todryk’s Fans Love Her Personality
While Todryk said she didn’t want to bring negative attention to the influencer role, she admitted she feels that fatigue as well.
“Everything now is an ad on Instagram,” she explained. “They’ll do an ad but they don’t say ‘partner,’ they don’t disclose it so it erodes that trust.”
On the flip side, she said that disclosing that also raises questions. “If you put ‘partner,’ like I do for my campaigns, then instantly people question if you’re just saying it to get paid,” the “No Demo Reno” star said.
As for being called an influencer, Todryk noted, “I felt like I got slapped with a job title that I didn’t know I was signing up for because it wasn’t a job yet.”
She added, “It evolved into now I have this title and now the title is somewhat negative in this landscape … and so I don’t want to be associated with the bad parts of it.”
The former HGTV star shared that she is selective about who she works with as an influencer and, overall, she wouldn’t change anything about the job. “It’s the longest single thing I’ve ever done in my whole life that I didn’t give up on because I still love it” she explained.
Todryk is clearly having a blast and fans appreciate how her fun personality comes shining through on social media.
“Why are you soooo funny???” one fan asked in the comments of one of her recent posts. Another shared, “You make me laugh in the best way!”
