Marlon and Shawn Wayans, the Wayans Brothers, have revealed how they crafted the most iconic scene from the classic parody horror film “Scary Movie.”
The actors, comedians, writers, and producers were chatting ahead of the movie’s release, which is today, Friday, June 5.
If you didn’t already know, the most iconic scene from the original film, which released in 2000, is a hilarious parody of the late-90s Budweiser beer commercials. It featured guys yelling “Wassuuuuup?!” at each other over the phone.
In “Scary Movie’s” parody of the commercials, the masked killer goes back-and-forth with a group of the movie’s main characters โ Marlon Wayans’ Shorty Meeks and his friends โ saying “Wassuuuuup?!” to each other in exaggerated ways.
The Wayans Brothers spoke to Rotten Tomatoes about the thought process that went into making that scene.
Marlon Wayans Wanted to Make the Killer & His Victims ‘Boys for a Minute’
The section of the Wayans Brothers’ chat with Rotten Tomatoes in which they break down the “Wassuuuuup?!” scene has been uploaded to the official Rotten Tomatoes Instagram account in the form of a 40-second clip.
Marlon Wayans said, “I mean, in the movie it’s just trying to find an organic way to, you know โ the wassup commercial, it was just so big and if anybody was going to do it, it would be funny to do it with Shorty and his friends.”
He went on, “And, of course, the killer calls them and what do they do? They get him on this ‘Wassuuuuup?!’ and he joins forces. You know, that was the fun. For me, as always with the killer, is take all that tension and make the two of them boys for a minute, and just have fun. Take all the energy out of it and put the comedy into it, and just have a good time.”
Shawn Wayans then humorously chimed in, “Then he goes back to killing you.”
It was an intriguing insight into one of the most memorable horror parody scenes in movie history.
One Instagram user commented, “And what a legendary moment it was๐๐คฃ.”
Someone else wrote, “An iconic scene ๐.”
The New ‘Scary Movie’ Isn’t Receiving Great Reviews
GettyThe new “Scary Movie” is in theaters today. Per IMDb, its plot is as follows: “Two friends find themselves caught up in mayhem involving killers, monsters and supernatural creatures once again.”
It’s fair to say it isn’t being received well by critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an approval rating of just 29%.
That being said, part of the charm of the “Scary Movie” franchise is that the movies are nothing more than silly, fun parodies. Taking them too seriously is a mistake.
That notion is evident in the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a far more respectable 69%.
The new “Scary Movie” stars Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall. Additionally, support comes from the likes of Damon Wayans Jr., Gregg Wayans, Kim Wayans, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, Dave Sheridan, Heidi Gardner, Lochlyn Munro, and Olivia Rose Keegan.
If you want an easy watch that doesn’t require much thought, it’s well worth a trip to the theater.
