‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ Singer Bonnie Tyler Has Emergency Surgery

Bonnie Tyler is on the mend after undergoing emergency surgery while in Portugal, prompting concern from fans around the world.

The 74-year-old singer, best known for her powerhouse hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” was admitted to a hospital in Faro, a region in Portugal’s Algarve where she owns a home.

The Statement Was Released on Her Website

News of the health scare was confirmed in a statement shared on her official website on Wednesday, May 6.

“We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery,” the statement read.

Fortunately, the procedure was successful, and Tyler is now focused on recovery. “The surgery went well and she is now recuperating,” the update continued. “We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

While no official cause was detailed, the Daily Mail suggested the singer suffered a perforated intestine after experiencing severe abdominal pain in recent days.

Despite the alarming situation, she is said to be stable following the operation.

The unexpected health issue comes as Tyler prepares for a busy period ahead, with a European tour scheduled to begin later this year.

Tyler Recently Spoke About Going on Tour

Just weeks before her hospitalization, she spoke positively about her overall health and her ability to continue performing.

“I’m fit enough at the moment, touch wood, and I’m really enjoying doing the shows,” she said in a March interview with HELLO! “I’m still rocking on that stage with my wonderful band, and if you’ve got your health, you’ve got everything.”

Tyler also shared how she maintains her wellness while on the road, including a simple but consistent fitness routine.

“I do home Pilates, only 20 minutes a day—it’s something I can do in my hotel rooms,” she explained.

She did acknowledge dealing with some physical challenges in recent years, particularly with her knees.

“I have had problems with my knees; I didn’t have new knees, I had what they call washouts… which turned out to be very successful,” she said, expressing hope that the procedure would provide long-term relief.

Tyler Loves Performing

Despite the demands of touring and the realities of aging, Tyler has remained deeply committed to performing.

In a 2025 interview with The Times, she reflected on how much she still enjoys life on the road.

“Touring keeps me going,” she said. “I consider myself a working-class girl and I’ve never stopped working… it does feel like an achievement to still be wanted by audiences at my age. I’m pretty energetic.”

Her passion for music and connection with fans has defined a decades-long career that includes multiple chart-topping hits like “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out for a Hero.”

She also represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013, further cementing her status as a global music icon.

As Tyler continues to recover, the focus remains on her health and well-being.

Fans will no doubt be eager to see her back on stage—but for now, the priority is a full and steady recovery after what was clearly a frightening ordeal.
