Mýa Opens Up About Why She Married Herself and What It Really Means

Mýa is setting the record straight about one of the most talked-about moments of her career.

More than a decade after she famously “married herself” in her 2015 music video for “The Truth,” the Grammy-winning singer is explaining what the symbolic gesture was actually meant to represent. While the concept sparked plenty of headlines and online debate at the time, Mýa says the message was never about giving up on love or relationships.

Instead, she was encouraging people to focus on themselves first. In an interview with E! News, Mýa recently reflected on the self-wedding and said the experience was rooted in self-love, self-discovery and personal growth.

Mýa Says the Message Was Often Misunderstood

“Getting to know yourself is first and foremost,” Mýa told E!, explaining that self-awareness serves as an “internal compass” that helps guide decisions and keeps people from becoming overly influenced by criticism or outside opinions.

Looking back, the singer acknowledged that the music video created what she described as a “fiasco” online. However, she said many people missed the point she was trying to make.

“When I ‘got married to myself’ in a music video that turned into this whole fiasco online, what I was trying to convey was: Commit to you. Learn you. Take the time,” she explained.

Mýa believes taking the time to understand yourself is more important than rushing into relationships because of societal expectations or outside pressure. She added that when people are secure within themselves, other areas of life often begin falling into place naturally.

“When you get right within, things begin to show up in your life, including romantic life,” she said, noting that relationships are healthiest when they come from a place of desire rather than necessity.

The comments also align with remarks Mýa has previously made about prioritizing self-love and personal growth. She has spoken openly about focusing on herself and learning not to seek fulfillment from outside sources.

The Singer Is Looking Ahead to New Music and a Possible Reunion

While reflecting on her personal journey, Mýa is also preparing for a new chapter in her career.

Per E! News, the singer’s upcoming album, “Retrospect,” will be her first full-length studio project in eight years. Mýa said the album is heavily inspired by the music, memories and influences that shaped her childhood.

“We’re bringing the funk, the party, the celebration and all the good memories from a specific time,” she said. “I’m a ’70s baby.”

She added that the project feels deeply personal and is designed to transport listeners back to the sounds that filled her home growing up.

Elsewhere, Mýa also addressed where she stands with fellow “Lady Marmalade” collaborators Christina Aguilera, Pink and Lil’ Kim more than 25 years after the iconic hit topped the charts. According to E! News, the singer shut down lingering rumors of tension between the quartet and said they’re all still on good terms.

“We are actually all cool,” Mýa said.

While no reunion plans have been announced, she admitted she would love to see it happen one day. Mýa explained that scheduling, budgeting and finding the right platform remain the biggest obstacles, adding that any reunion would need to live up to the legacy of the original.

Still, she’s hopeful.

“The fans are not alone because I am right there with you,” she said. “Fingers crossed.”
