Earlier this week Blink-182 icon Travis Barker released his new documentary, “Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear”. The tell-all style doc discusses various aspects of the singer’s personal life, from his career and personal struggles to surviving a plane crash in 2008 where the plane caught fire and claimed the lives of multiple of his friends.
Speaking on “The Joe Rogan Experience”, Travis also revealed that he was equipped with a special medical device after the crash to help him live.
What is The Medical Device Travis Has?
GettyTravis has a special device known as an inferior vena cava blood-clot filter implanted into his body. The device’s job is to catch blood clots that the star may accumulate as a result of his injury’s trauma to prevent them from reaching his heart or lungs.
The filter has an expected lifespan of 20 years, so in less than three years it is set to stop working. However, a procedure to remove the device would now not be possible because it has fused into Travis’ vein wall too deeply.
Travis explained: “They [his doctors] say the surgery to take it out would be more life-threatening than leaving it in.”
The Tragic Plane Crash
In 2008 Travis was boarding a plane with his loved ones, when he had a funny feeling that something was going to go wrong. He contacted his dad about it, before boarding the plane anyway and quickly realizing that something was off. As the plane tried to take off it kept dipping up and down in the sky and began to make loud noises that sounded like shots from a gun. The plane soon after crashed, and moments after Travis manage to escape through one of its emergency exits, the plane burst into flames.
Speaking about the experience, Travis said as per The Daily Mail: “I said, ‘ If something happens, make sure everything’s cool with the kids. That was definitely emotional for whatever reason. I just said, ‘I have a weird feeling.
“The plane attempted to take off and go into the air, and then we’d go down, go into the air, go down, and we end up hitting an embankment. Just fire and chaos everywhere.
“I’m running, and the fire won’t go out. I stop, drop and roll, and AM came out, and he patted my feet off fire. 10 seconds later the plane blows up.”
Both pilots were killed, along with Barker’s personal assistant, Chris Baker, and his bodyguard, Che Still.
Travis also bravely spoke about his recovery and how he struggled to want to live. The star revealed: “I couldn’t see my kids because 65 percent of my body was an open wound. I was handling that miserably.
“I was suicidal in the hospital, and I was there for another three and a half months and had 27 surgeries. I really had no one; I would exhaust post-traumatic doctors, and I would hit walls constantly.”
We wish Travis all the best and send warm congratulations his way on the success of launching his documentary.
