Ben Affleck & Matt Damon’s Decades-Long Friendship
GettyAffleck and Damon have been friends for decades, since childhood. They met when Affleck was 8, and Damon was 10, Parade reports, and attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School together.
Their first big collaboration was in 1997 when they co-wrote and starred in “Good Will Hunting,” which earned them critical praise. They have continued to work together and remain best friends.
In October 2025, Damon shared a promotional poster for their latest film, “The Rip,” on Instagram. The film was released on Netflix. He briefly touched on their friendship in the caption, writing, “Me and the bestie bouta let it rip In theaters Jan 2026 #therip #netflix.”
In an industry that is not always celebrated for its long relationships, what Affleck and Damon have is special. In an interview with Parade in October 2007, Affleck shed light on their friendship and how it changed his life. “Matt gave acting a framework, an integration into the social hierarchy at school,” he said. “Before Matt, I was by myself. Acting was a solo activity where I’d just go off and do something, act in a little TV show or something, and no one understood it. None of the other kids knew what it was I did, how it worked, or anything.”
He continued, “All of a sudden, I had this friend, Matt, and he gets it and wants to do it and thinks it’s interesting and wants to talk about it. Soon both of us are doing it.” Affleck also reflected on how they would attend interviews together as teenagers and that having Damon as a friend had a positive impact on his career.
