One of Netflix‘s most critically acclaimed series in recent years is finally returning with its long-awaited fourth season.
On Monday, August 17, the streamer announced that the new season of “The Diplomat” would be premiering in the fall, continuing the saga of U.S. ambassador to the U.K. Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) as the fragile peace deal she’s just brokered threatens to collapse — along with her shattered marriage.
‘The Diplomat’ Season 4
When we last saw Ambassador Kate Wyler, she’d just realized that she’d been double-crossed by her husband (Rufus Sewell) — who’d just become Vice President of the U.S.
“In Season 4 of ‘The Diplomat,’ two marriages threaten to eat each other alive,” reads Netflix’s logline for the upcoming season.
“One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the U.S. and U.K., as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Grace Penn and VP Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war,” the logline continues.
“Kate and Todd, at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home,” the logline adds, concluding: “Four Emmy nominees paint an unmissable portrait of two marriages: Keri Russell as Ambassador Kate Wyler, Rufus Sewell as Vice President Hal Wyler, Allison Janney as President Grace Penn and Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn.”
‘A Crumbling Roller Coaster’
Netflix“This season is built on the foursome that is Kate, Hal, Grace, and Todd,” creator, showrunner, and executive producer Debora Cahn tells Tudum of the fourth season.
“They’re two couples strapped together in one car on a crumbling roller coaster. Each of them has a professional, public role that’s upending their ability to function as a married person,” Cahn adds. “And there’s a change-partners thing that happens, where the growing bond between Grace and Hal creates a not-so-functional alliance between Kate and Todd.”
A Fragile Peace
In the Season 4 trailer, Kate tells Hal that she’s “not trying to get out of the marriage” — but that she’s “trying to get back in.”
That raises the question of whether this famously tumultuous marriage can survive — a question that is at the heart of the new season. That’s particularly true when Kate vows, “I, Katherine Wyler, take you for better or for worse, worse, and worse.”
Beyond their marriage, the stakes have never been higher for Kate and Hal — which forces Kate into an uneasy alliance with the First Gentleman, played by “West Wing” alum Bradley Whitford.
“While the two core marriages threaten to eat each other alive, one catastrophic moment shatters ‘The Diplomat’s other central relationship: the fragile peace Kate has brokered between the U.S. and U.K. As she fights to staunch the bleeding, Grace and Hal’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon could hurtle the United States toward war,” Tudum explains. “Kate and Todd, at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home.”
When Will Season 4 of ‘The Diplomat’ Arrive?
NetflixThe action picks up from when things left off in the third-season finale when the new season of “The Diplomat” premieres October 15 on Netflix.
