Back in 1998, Lindsay Lohan played double-duty in what would be become one of her most iconic movies, “The Parent Trap.”
But while every generation since has adored the movie, which also stars Dennis Quaid, Lisa Ann Walter, Elaine Hendrix and the late Natasha Richardson, there’s still no sequel in sight. In a new interview with Quaid, he explained exactly why.
Dennis Quaid Can’t Fathom Another ‘Parent Trap’ Without Natasha Richardson
In new interview with Parade for his upcoming film “I Can Only Imagine 2,” Quaid explained that a reboot would always feel incomplete without Richardson, who sadly passed away in 2009 at age 45 after a skiing accident.
“[I’d] love to,” he said when asked about a spinoff or sequel. “But Natasha. I don’t see how we could do it without Natasha. She’s not here anymore, but, you know, God bless her.”
Despite being hesitant about a sequel, Quaid is still thankful for the movie and all its success over the years.
“It’s just the number one [thing people ask me about]. It really is,” Quaid said. “It’s the number one, and they’re not bugging me. Thank God for ‘Parent Trap.’ Really, it’s got so many people.”
“I think we’re going, since we made it, now we have like three generations of kids who saw it 40 times,” he added.
Lisa Ann Walter Already Shared Her One Condition for ‘The Parent Trap 2’
GettyWhile Quaid is understandably wary of a sequel, Walter, who played Chessy in the movie, has already set her one condition for her to say yes.
“Dennis has said that he doesn’t think it’s doable without Natasha, and I understand that,” Walter told People in 2025. “The movie — it’s a kids’ story, but it’s a love story. So to have a love story that involves that grief, that sadness — if it was written beautifully, maybe it’s doable.”
For Walter, that second movie, which would focus on the twins’ journey with grief and loss, would also have to be written by the first movie’s creator, Nancy Meyers. “One-hundred percent if Nancy Meyers wrote it,” Walter said.
While a sequel for “The Parent Trap” is still far away, the cast of the movie has supported each other over the years. In July 2025, Walter and Hendrix, who are best friends in real life, attended the red carpet of “Freakier Friday” to support Lohan.
Just a few months after, in October, Quaid attended an episode of “Dancing With the Stars” in which Hendrix, who ended up reaching fifth place in the season, made a touching tribute to Walter and their many years of friendship.
