Taylor Swift has held the title of “Trendsetter” for a long time now, so why should her engagement be any different?
The country’s top jewelers say Taylor’s brand new sparkly engagement ring has already sparked a trend for antique cut diamonds.
Jeweler and gemologist Ali Galgano told PEOPLE that Taylor Swift’s engagement to Travis Kelce had an immediate effect. “Within 24 hours, I received hundreds of messages from clients asking about antique cushions,” he said.
The three key buzz words on Taylor’s trending ring are “old mine cut.”
Those words mean a diamond likely dating to the 1800’s, which was a time when each diamond had to be shaped “entirely by hand” according to Tom Moses, executive vice president and chief laboratory and research officer at the Gemological Institute of America.
In other words, that diamond has some folklore (yep, we said it.)
Taylor’s Diamond: What We Know
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were kind enough to include a closeup of Taylor Swift’s engagement ring in their joint Instagram post announcing their engagement.
But they haven’t released any details about the ring itself.
According to People, Travis Kelce worked with designer and Artifex Fine Jewelry founder Kindred Lubeck to come up with a ring worthy of Taylor’s Engagement Era.
And you can bet jewelers have studied that third picture in the Instagram carousel closely.
Jeweler and gemologist Ali Galgano told PEOPLE that she estimates the ring to be between seven and nine carats. Stones that large from that era, ahem, are “exceptionally rare.”
They’re also exceptionally pricey. “Antique cuts also command a premium over modern equivalents, and demand will likely skyrocket in the wake of Taylor’s engagement,” she revealed. “In fact, within 24 hours of the news breaking, I received hundreds of messages from clients asking about antique cushions.”
While Galgano doesn’t know the history of Taylor’s specific ring, she explains why antique diamonds are so special.
“They were cut by hand for candlelight rather than electric light, long before modern symmetry standards, which means no two are alike,” she explained. “Instead of the sharp brilliance of modern cuts, they give off a softer, more romantic glow — and that uniqueness is exactly what makes them so coveted today.”
How Much Is Taylor Swift’s Ring Worth?
Like any bride-to-be, Taylor Swift would likely tell you her engagement ring is priceless.
While jewelry experts say that Swift’s ring is likely worth up to $5 million.
And like Taylor’s song catalog, that value is likely to rise thanks to her star power.
“In a world where flawless, lab-grown diamonds are plentiful, there’s something refreshing about an older stone with quirks and imperfections. It feels authentic,” Ali Galgano explained. “Antique cuts also command a premium over modern equivalents, and demand will likely skyrocket in the wake of Taylor’s engagement.”
Galgano also predicts Tay’s ring “will inspire a move toward chunkier bands and away from the thin, delicate styles that put all the attention on the center stone.”
She also thinks it will shift priorities when it comes to engagement rings.
“What I admire most is that Taylor and Travis passed on the big design houses, opting instead for an independent goldsmith to handcraft a ring that felt uniquely theirs,” she explained. “To me, that choice signals a bigger shift: couples moving away from cookie-cutter brand names and toward one-of-a-kind jewels with designs that truly resonate — and pieces no one else will have.”
