Alan Cumming Opens Up on How ‘The Traitors’ Made His Dog Famous

Since the launch of the U.S. version of “The Traitors” back in 2023, Scottish actor Alan Cumming has been a regular on television screens. While his outlandish outfits and camp behavior are an essential element of the series, it is his dog Lala that often steals the show when she is seen on screen.

In a recent interview, Cumming has shed light on what makes Lala so lovable and revealed some behind-the-scenes secrets about the cute pooch that most people won’t know.

Lala Has Become a Staple of ‘The Traitors’

To celebrate the start of the fourth season of “The Traitors,” Cumming spoke to CBS Mornings to discuss the show and give viewers a tour of the iconic Scottish castle where the action takes place. In a clip shared to Instagram, the host was asked about his dog Lala, who often appears in the reality television series.

Explaining just how famous Lala has become, Cumming spoke about how often she is recognized in public. He said, “People come up to me and say ‘Is that Lala from The Traitors?’ It’s just hilarious.”

He then goes on to express his disbelief about his pet’s influence.”All this happened to her,” he said. “She’s on merch and everything. I mean it’s hilarious because she’s just, you know, this little mutt from Costa Rica who lucked out, I suppose.”

However, the actor and presenter did reveal that the dog sounds you hear on television are not from Lala. “Her bark has to be dubbed in,” Cumming divulged. “She never makes a sound. There’s some dog somewhere it has got a job dubbing Lala or some dog in a sound library. It’s so crazy.”

Alan Cumming has Fought for ‘The Traitors’ to be More Inclusive

Cumming has also recently spoken out about his battle to have more LGBTQ+ visibility on “The Traitors,” with the host suggesting that he feels there is not enough queer representation on the show.

“’The Traitors’ is such a queer show,” he said. “There’s me at the center of it, being super queer with all my crazy outfits.”

Discussing the third season of the series, he said, “Two of the winners this year are queer people, and that’s so lovely. I really did push to have a better representation in the show, and that’s certainly worked.”

He continued, “I think it’s a really positive thing to see so many queer people and, hopefully, trans people in a show that also celebrates dressing up, androgyny, femme-ness, and queerness. Hopefully, we challenge people.”
