When Christine Taylor stepped into character as Marcia Brady for the 1995 film classic “The Brady Bunch Movie,” she captured the iconic ’70s teen star’s sweet voice, classic hair flips, and comedic timing.
But behind the scenes, Taylor faced an unexpected demand. Before cameras even began rolling, she was bluntly instructed that she needed to lose weight if she wanted to play the famous TV eldest sister on the big screen.
Christine Taylor Was ‘Embarrassed’ Over Comments About Her Weight
In an interview for the podcast “Office Ladies,” hosted by “The Office” stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, Taylor discussed her iconic portrayal of one of the ’70s most beloved characters. She reimagined the character in the 1995 film version of the classic television series.
“I was not a super heavy person. But they asked me to lose 10 pounds,” she explained.
“Of course, I was embarrassed when that ask came my way,” Taylor continued. However, she admitted, that in the decade the film was made, the ’90s, it may have been a more common request of actresses. But today, she says, that would “never happen.”
Admittedly, she said her weight slightly fluctuated throughout the finished film. “I’ll come into a scene looking a little rounder. Then I exit the scene looking a little thinner, just because of how they had to reshoot things,” she revealed.
Christine Taylor Felt Destined to Play ‘The Brady Bunch’s’ Marcia Brady
Christine Taylor admitted that she was a huge “Brady Bunch” fan before playing Marcia Brady in the 1995 film.
She told Fisher and Kinsey, “‘The Brady Bunch’ was my after-school treat.” She admitted to knowing “every single episode, I’ve seen backwards and forwards, inside out.”
Taylor was particularly thrilled when the show’s creator, Sherwood Schwartz, wanted to meet her after her casting. He was a producer on the feature film “The Brady Bunch Movie.”
“I went to Sherwood Schwartz’s house and got to talk to him about [the show]. It was a pinch-me moment that I cannot believe to this day that I still didn’t keep my little tape from the answering machine.”
Taylor concluded that she loved the show “so much,” she wanted her performance to be “genuine and pure and so Maureen.” Maureen McCormick was the role’s originator on the series, playing the eldest Brady sister from 1969 through 1974.
“The Brady Bunch Movie” was released in 1995. It was so popular, it spawned a 1996 sequel, “A Very Brady Sequel.”
The premise was hilarious. The squeaky-clean, cheerful 1970s TV family was squarely a part of the cynical, grunge-era world of mid-1990s Los Angeles. However, the family continued to dress, speak, and behave as if they were still in the early 1970s.
The film starred Taylor, Gary Cole, Shelly Long, Christopher Daniel Barnes, Paul Sutera, Jennifer Elise Cox, Jesse Lee Soffer and Olivia Hack. Also in the cast were Henriette Mantel, Michael McKean, Jean Smart, Jack Noseworthy and Moriah Snyder.
Christine Taylor finally got to meet her idol face-to-face in April 2026. She and Maureen McCormick shared a sweet Instagram selfie quoting an iconic Brady song in its caption, “It’s a Sunshine Day!”
