Beyoncé … Blake Lively … Nicole Kidman, oh my! The stars were out in force for the 2026 Met Gala, and to some fans’ surprise, that list includes music industry superstar and fashion icon, Cher.
After years of choosing to forgo the epic entrance that many stars make at the beginning of the event, “Cher has returned to the Met Gala, after all,” according to E! News. Indeed, the icon “walked the Met Gala steps for the first time in more than a decade, donning a show-stopping look for this year’s theme of ‘Costume Art.'”
Cher Looked Super Chic in Her Current Signature Look
GettyOver the years, Cher has worn countless buzz-worthy ensembles that have embraced a wide range of styles. Each one more eye-catching than the last, and always setting her aside as a celebrity who knows how to stand out in a stunningly sartorial way.
GettyWhen it comes to the 2026 Met Gala — which featured a “Fashion is Art” theme and dresscode — E! notes that “Cher donned an all-black look that featured a leather top, thigh-high slitted skirt and a lacy bodysuit as she walked the steps to the New York City museum on the first Monday of May. She accessorized the look with custom Chrome Hearts and Swarovski jewelry and her bleach blonde locks in gentle waves.”
GettyJust Jared mentions that “Cher wore a Burberry outfit with a black silk tulle dress and a leather jacket.”
Getty“She also took photos with her goddaughter, Jesse Jo Stark, as she walked the carpet at the 2026 event,” Just Jared added.
GettyCher opted for a similar look back in February, when she attended the 68th Grammy Awards to accept the Lifetime Achievement Award. Again, wearing a leather jacket and sheer black lace bodysuit, it looks like this might be the star’s current signature style.
Cher Hasn’t Been Spotted on the Met Gala Carpet for Years
GettyAlthough Cher is one of the biggest stars in show business and is known for her fashionable ways, she hasn’t been spotted at the Met Gala for years.
Indeed, Cher’s 2026 appearance is her first since she made a “surprise performance in 2019, when she attended the gala for its theme of ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion,'” per E! However, while she did attend the event, she slipped quietly inside and didn’t make an appearance on the carpet or pose for photos.
Instead, “Cher brought her star power straight to the museum’s Temple of Dendur where she performed songs ‘Waterloo,’ ‘Strong Enough’ and ‘Believe’ while dressed in patch-ified jeans, a hot pink silk camisole and black leather jacket. Atop her head was a bleach blonde wig overflowing with bouncy curls,” E! notes.
Beyond that, E! explains that “[a]fter a quick costume change, the Moonstruck star arrived back on stage in a sequined sheer bodysuit and blue wig to perform ‘Found Someone’ and ‘Turn Back Time.'”
When Cher wrapped up her performance, RuPaul stepped up to act at the DJ for the remainder of the event.
As for actually popping up at this year’s big night, “Cher’s appearance on the actual Met Gala steps marks the first time she’s walked the event’s carpet since the 2015 event, ‘China: Through The Looking Glass,’ where she walked alongside Marc Jacobs.”
