Beyond Chandler Bing: Remembering Matthew Perry on What Would’ve Been His 57th Birthday

Ask most people to describe Matthew Perry, and they will instantly say one word: Chandler. And yes, why not? With Bing, he didn’t just play him – he owned him. With his perfect comedic chops, he redefined a generation of sitcoms without even trying. But reducing Perry to one sitcom would be a disservice on what could have been his 57th birthday.

When I die, I don’t want ‘Friends’ to be the first thing that’s mentioned,” Matthew Perry said on the Q with Tom Power podcast in November 2022.

Long before the character of Chandler Bing crossed his paths, Perry began laying the groundwork for success. In 1979, Perry made his TV debut at age 10 in show 240-Robert, a police drama starring his father, John Bennett Perry.

He picked up minor roles on show like Charles in Charge and Silver Spoons before bagging his first lead role in 1987 in Boys Will Be Boys, opposite Kiel Martin.

In truth, this was just the beginning for Perry. Of the many major and minor project Matthew worked on pre-Friends between the ‘80s and ‘90s, a few still stand the test of time: guest spot on Who’s The Boss? and Beverly Hills, 90210,  a three-episode arc on Growing Pains as Sandy, his film debut opposite River Phoenix in  A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon, and a recurring role on the CBS sitcom Sydney.

With the launch of Friends, Perry gained wider recognition than ever before. His next acclaimed project came three years into the show’s run, starring opposite Salma Hayek in Fools Rush In (1997). Nailing another comedic role, Perry played Alex, a bachelor who gets Hayek’s character Isabel pregnant after a one night stand in Las Vegas.

Next came Three to Tango (1999), a comedy about falling for your boss’ girl. Matthew starred opposite Neve Campbell and Dylan McDermott, and together the trio brought a chemistry critic couldn’t resist praising.

Just as in his pre-Friends era, the list kept growing –  from comedy to drama, Perry got the chance to show his range. The Whole Nine Yards, Almost Heroes, Serving Sara, The West Wing were just few of the projects that followed.

Life Beyond Acting

Perry was an open advocate for people struggling with addiction. So much so that he wanted his legacy to extend far beyond his work in Friends. In that same interview on Q with Tom Power, he said, “The best thing about me, bar none, is that if an alcoholic or drug addict comes up to me and says, ‘Will you help me?’ I can say yes and follow up and do it.”

In 2013, he opened Perry House, a sober-living facility for men in his former Malibu house.

The work he stood for continued even after his tragic demise on October 28, 2023, at age 54, at his home in Los Angeles, from the acute effects of ketamine use exacerbated by accidental drowning. The Matthew Perry Foundation was established in his honor after his death, continuing his work around addiction recovery, reducing stigma and expanding access to treatment.
