James Marsters Honors Late ‘Buffy’ Co-Star Nicholas Brendon: ‘Brilliantly Talented’

Another co-star of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” actor Nicholas Brendon has paid tribute to him following his tragic passing on Friday, March 20.

James Marsters, who played Buffy’s iconic platinum-haired vampire enemy-turned-ally Spike in the series, shared some of the show’s most memorable scenes with Brendon. Spike and Brendon’s character, Xander Harris, had an ongoing rivalry from the moment they first met. Even when Spike turned good, Xander never truly trusted him. It made for brilliant viewing.

Marsters, 63, took to his Instagram account to share his thoughts on Brendon’s passing with his near-74,000 followers.

James Marsters’ post about Nicholas Brendon’s passing includes a photograph of a typical interaction between Spike and Xander Harris. In the image, Xander has Spike pushed up against a wall in a scene symbolic of the two characters’ volatile relationship on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

Marsters caption on the post reads, “I’m sad hearing the news of Nick’s passing. He was a brilliantly talented actor, and it was a joy to work with him on a show that was a high point in both of our lives.”

His post concludes saying, “I hope his family gets the space they need to grieve.”

Marsters is one of many “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” actors to pay tribute to Brendon. Others include Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, David Boreanaz, and Charisma Carpenter.

The comments section of James Marsters’ post about Nicholas Brendon is full of comments from grieving fans. Many of them remembered the brilliant dynamic the two actors had as Spike and Xander Harris.

One follower wrote, “You & Him had some of the funniest moments together. RIP Nicky.”

Another of Marsters’ followers said, “🕯️🙏🕯️ On of my favorite moments of Spike and Xander was you guys and the chip Glory skit, RIP 🙏.”

Someone else commented, “Beautifully said, James. My favorite Buffy seasons were the early ones but a lot of the best scenes came from simple things like in season 4 when Spike stayed in Xander’s basement and they acted like bickering brothers. Hilarious 😂.”

Additionally, another “Buffy” fan said, “His passing is so very tragic and sad. The two of you working together on the high school jacket episode was the best ever. Comedy gold. Always enjoyed Xander and Spike when they worked together albeit reluctantly.”

Finally, one Instagram user wrote, “I have been doing a rewatch of Buffy and Angel and recalling (not that I ever forgot) how deeply in my bones the art that you all made is. People are complicated and you cannot love the pain away for or from them. I hope you and your loved ones are taking care of yourselves.”

We hope James Marsters is coping with the lost of his former co-star and friend. Equally, we hope everyone close to Nicholas Brendon is getting some comfort from the many kind comments about him from fans and former co-stars online.

May Nicholas Brendon rest in eternal peace.
