Carrie Underwood’s Journey With the Grand Ole Opry
Underwood made her Opry debut in June 2005, two weeks after winning “American Idol.” She became an official member on May 10, 2008. In her profile for the Opry, Underwood reflected on appearing onstage after winning the singing competition. “It’s kind of magical,” she said. “I don’t feel like I deserve this at all.”
“She was introduced to the Opry by Country Music Hall of Famer Bill Anderson; she was invited to join the Opry by Randy Travis; and she was inducted by Garth Brooks,” the website reports. Speaking of her induction, Underwood said, “The induction award they gave me says, ‘Hey, you’re a part of the family.’ It means a lot to me because it’s the heart of country music, the church, the sacred place, the super-elite club that says you love this music.”
In a 2023 interview with Backstage Country, she spoke about what the Opry means to her. “I feel like I’ve been very blessed to take part in a lot of awards shows and things like that over the years, but kind of having this thing in my career that I feel like I was able to accomplish is just one of the most important things that I think I have ever done,” she said. “I love the Opry; I love the family; I love that it signifies being a part of country music, and we call it the Mother Church, and we do so for very good reason.”
She continued, “It is like going to church, and you can pay your respects to those that came before, those that are playing now, and whoever’s going to come later on. It’s just a really cool thing just being able to be a part of that family.”
