A little over a year after pop star and former “American Idol” judge Katy Perry last filmed the talent show with her fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, her life looks very different than it did in May 2024. Professionally, she’s been traveling the globe for her world concert tour, and personally, she split from her fiancé Orlando Bloom and is now dating former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
On November 6, 2025, Bryan admitted to Entertainment Tonight that he did not expect Perry’s pairing with Trudeau, but had heard rumors about it for a while.

When ET asked what Bryan thought of Perry’s new love, he raised his eyebrows a bit and then said, “Well, I hadn’t reached out to Katy about that, but you know it was in the rumor wire for quite some time.”
“Yeah, I didn’t see that coming,” he admitted, adding that he was tempted to text the pop star about it when she and Trudeau went public with their relationship.
Bryan said, “You know, when they kind of went public with it, I think I pulled up her contact and I was almost going, ‘Oh! It’s official!’ But I didn’t talk to her about it.”
“You know, as long as she’s happy, and you know, when you work with someone so long, you become friends,” the country star continued. “That’s all I can ask for her is to be happy and enjoy where she’s at in life.”

DisneyBryan and Perry grew close as they worked side-by-side on “American Idol” from 2018 to 2024. After she decided to leave the show to work on new music and a world tour, Bryan said her farewell party was “really emotional.”
“We got to toast Katy and we got to say some really amazing things to her,” Bryan told GMA of the dinner. “And it was really emotional and (there was) a lot of love in the room. It was a perfect way to wrap the season and to wrap, certainly, Katy’s tenure with us, and it was really special.”
In addition to Bryan continuing to judge “American Idol” alongside Richie and Carrie Underwood, who will return for her second season as a judge in January, Bryan has been busy touring just like Perry. But he told ET they haven’t been to each other’s shows.
“Katy was in Nashville doing a show,” Bryan said. “I wasn’t able to make it to the show, and she kinda texted me, going, ‘Why didn’t you come to the show!?'” He then laughed, “I was like, ‘Well, you haven’t been to any of my shows yet!’
Katy Perry & Justin Trudeau Were First Spotted Together
Perry and Trudeau confirmed their romance on October 25, TMZ first reported, by stepping out of a Paris restaurant hand-in-hand. Photographers snapped photos as they left the eatery, but they weren’t the first pics of the couple together.
The duo was first seen dining together in July at Montreal restaurant Le Violon. Days later, they were spotted out for a walk in Montreal, and Trudeau later attended Perry’s concert there with his daughter. In late September, a tourist captured photos of the duo kissing on her 78-foot yacht off the coast of Santa Barbara, California.
Perry and Bloom confirmed their split in June, per Page Six, and announced that they were committed to co-parenting their daughter, five-year-old Daisy Dove. Meanwhile, Trudeau confirmed his separation from his wife, Sophie Grégoire, in 2023 after 18 years of marriage, according to NPR. They share three children.
