Janet Caperna, 36, vulnerably revealed on her “The Side of the Hill” podcast on Friday, Jan. 16, that she was recently diagnosed with a serious case of acute gastritis and colitis.
“I’ve never experienced pain like this in my life,” she shared. “I’m not kidding, worse than childbirth. It felt like everything from kind of my lower esophagus down to, like, my lower belly was on fire and had glass shards. I felt like I was being squeezed from the inside.”
Caperna ended up losing 20 lbs in a matter of two weeks, leading her to explain why she might look so different in such a short span of time. “I got so sick that I lost a ton of weight that it’s gonna be really noticeable,” she said. “If you see me in person, or in photos, or anything, I just want to explain from the top exactly what happened just so people aren’t wondering why I look so sick, because I do.”
Janet Caperna Expresses ‘Panic’ Over Ongoing Symptoms
“The Valley” star said that after going out for New Year’s, she began to feel sick. Thinking it was a hangover, Caperna brushed off the symptoms. But when it continued for several days, she knew something was seriously wrong.
“I started kind of panicking,” she explained of how she couldn’t stop throwing up days after her typical New Year’s Eve celebrations.
When she finally decided to go to the hospital, she was sent home without a diagnosis. After several more days at home without a change in her symptoms, Caperna went back to the hospital to get to the bottom of her debilitating pain. That’s when she was given the diagnosis of acute gastritis and colitis.
What Are Acute Gastritis & Colitis?
GettyAccording to the Cleveland Clinic, gastritis is the “inflammation in the soft mucous lining of your stomach,” while colitis is the “inflammation in your colon.”
With the help of prescriptions from the doctor, Caperna said she was thankful for the relief; however, the uncertainty of when, and if, her condition will flare up again has her on edge.
With the “constant pain,” Caperna expressed on her podcast that she “wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy, ever.”
“I’m embarrassed by how I look right now,” she added, saying that losing so much weight at her tall height makes her now appear emaciated, when in fact, she’s struggling from a medical crisis that she is unable to control.
Caperna said that doctors weren’t able to “pinpoint” what started her excruciating symptoms. Going forward, though, the mom of one said she plans to change to a healthier diet to prevent a potential flare up. “I want to live long,” she emotionally shared.
