Dolly Parton never forgot the green lunchbox her father, Robert Lee Parton, carried to work each day while supporting his wife and 12 children.
The country music legend shared the story of what her family called “Daddy’s dinner bucket” on her official website, explaining how something as ordinary as a lunchbox became one of her favorite childhood memories.
Years later, long after her father stopped carrying it to work, the lunchbox unexpectedly made its way back to the Parton family.
That’s when they discovered something on it they never knew was there.
The story took on new meaning after an August 25 announcement from Parton’s nephew, Bryan Seaver, who remembered his aunt by comparing her directly to the father she loved.
“Dolly was a farmer, just like her daddy; he farmed the soil, she farmed songs and happiness,” Seaver said in a video posted to Parton’s Instagram account.

According to Parton’s official website, Lee Parton carried his green dinner bucket to work every day.
The father of 12 worked hard to provide for his large family, but the children still looked forward to seeing what might be left inside his lunchbox when he returned home.
Parton remembered her father saving pieces of his lunch specifically for them.
Sometimes it was part of a bologna sandwich. Other times, there might be a piece of pie.
The children would take whatever their father had brought home and head beneath a blackberry bush, where they would share the food and have a small picnic together.
Parton remembered it as a simple family tradition decades later.
Eventually, Lee retired and no longer needed the lunchbox, so he gave it to another working man named Oscar Dunn.
The old green dinner bucket left the Parton household, but its story wasn’t finished.

Lee passed away in 2000, but his lunchbox eventually found its way back to his children.
Dolly’s brother Randy Parton received a brown paper bag from his wife, Deb, on Christmas Eve.
Inside was their father’s old green dinner bucket.
Deb had worked with Dunn’s family to return the lunchbox to the Partons.
For Randy, getting an object so closely connected to his father and childhood was already meaningful. Then he noticed another detail.
Their father’s name had been scratched into the green paint.
The discovery was especially significant because Lee had been unable to read or write.
At some point, however, he had learned how to write his own name.
That name remained on the lunchbox that had traveled to work with him each day before eventually finding its way back to his family.
Lee Parton Inspired One of Dolly’s Biggest Legacies
Her father’s struggles with literacy remained important to Parton throughout her life.
Parton created the Imagination Library in 1995 in her home county in East Tennessee. The program provides free books to children from birth to age 5, regardless of their family’s income.
Parton repeatedly credited her father as the program’s inspiration.
That connection makes discovering his handwritten name on the old lunchbox even more meaningful in the Parton family’s story.
The dinner bucket represented a father working to provide for 12 children, bringing pieces of his own lunch home to them and quietly learning to write his name.
Decades later, Parton used her success to help other children learn to read.

Following Parton’s passing at age 80 on August 25, Seaver reflected on the doors his aunt opened for both her own family and others.
“Dolly opened doors not just for me but for her entire family to reach the potential we didn’t even know was possible,” Seaver said. “Dolly also opened doors for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians and dreamers from every walk of life and across every continent.”
Seaver also promised that Parton’s family and team would continue protecting the legacy she created.
“Our family and the team she has entrusted with her legacy will work diligently to ensure her spirit will live with us forever,” he said.
