Derek Hough is sharing a deeply personal side of himself with fans. The “Dancing With the Stars” judge posted a raw, heartfelt music video featuring a medley of his favorite Switchfoot songs, reflecting on life as he recently turned 40.
The emotional clip struck a chord with fellow “DWTS” pro dancer Mark Ballas, who showed his appreciation for Hough’s vulnerable performance.
A Medley of Switchfoot Songs
Derek Hough has been riding a high lately. He and his wife, Hayley Erbert, are expecting their first child, and he’s taking over as host of “Extra.”
It seems all these blessings in his life have him looking back at his life. He is especially reflecting since he turned 40 this year.
In a touching post on Instagram, Hough shared, “Here’s a little something from the heart: a medley of three of my favorite Switchfoot songs ‘Dare You to Move,’ ‘This is Your Life,’ and ‘Meant to Be.’”
Hough went on to say that he “originally recorded this just for myself, kind of like a personal conversation in music form.” He said that he’s been doing some reflecting after turning 40 and, “over time, these lyrics have shifted in meaning for me, they went from being words I used to ask myself to something I now imagine singing to my future child.”
While Hough says he never got around to making a full video, he thought, “Why not just share this raw clip?”
He warned fans that it was a long clip, but “if you make it to the big finish at the end, you’ll get the full vibe.”
The Vibe Was Gotten
While Hough was sharing a very personal video, he was hoping fans would understand the vibe he was going for. It seems like they did, as friends and fans were all loving the video in the comments, including Ballas.
In his comment, Ballas said, “LOVE THIS.. these songs take me back 🥹.”
A fan commented, “Love this! Switchfoot is all of us millennials favorite band 🙌,” and another fan added, “Touch my heart… Touched my soul… Absolutely beautiful Derek. You have definitely been blessed and are a very gifted young man🙌👏.”
