James Van Der Beek’s Ex-Wife Breaks Silence on His Passing With Heart Wrenching Tribute

A day after James Van Der Beek’s heartbreaking death on February 11 at age 48, those who once shared his life are beginning to speak through their grief.

Among them is his former wife, Heather McComb, who has now offered a deeply personal tribute. McComb, 48, shed light on a chapter of life they built together long before “Dawson’s Creek” made him a star.

Her message revisited a time defined by youth, shared hopes, and the early steps of a career that would soon transform everything.

Heather McComb Reflects on Their Early Years Together

McComb shared a photo from her 21st birthday, taken before “Dawson’s Creek” had even aired, offering a glimpse into their life before fame.

“Thank you for everyone who has reached out,” she wrote. “I appreciate and feel all your love. I am heartbroken over the loss of beloved James. I am especially heartbroken for his incredible wife Kimberly, his beautiful children and his amazing family, Jim, Jared, Juliana and all of his family and friends who I know he loved deeply.”

Reflecting on that earlier chapter, she continued: “This picture is from my 21st birthday. Dawson’s Creek hadn’t even aired yet. This is how I will always see James, innocent, kind, and pure of heart.”

The two began dating in the late 1990s, around the time the WB series premiered in 1998. They married in 2003 and separated in April 2009.

NBC reported that their amicable divorce was finalized in March 2010, months before Van Der Beek married Kimberly Brook, who remained a solid source of his strength as his wife at the time of his passing.

McComb said the connection they built never truly faded, even after their marriage ended.

“What a journey we shared over the years. I sit here in immense gratitude for the special connection, friendship, and love that James and I shared that has endured through decades. I will treasure the last loving words we exchanged.”

She remembered him not as a television star, but as the man she knew away from the cameras.

“James was a beautiful soul filled with so much light, love, talent, humor, depth, sensitivity, knowledge and a deep love of God that shined through him. He shined so bright yet was so humble and human.”

“Always searching, always growing, always going deeper, always chasing things outside his comfort zone,” she wrote, before adding, “I know that James loved being a father so much and oh how he loved Kimberly with his everything. True soulmates.”

She praised Kimberly’s strength during his illness.

“How she showed up for him with such grace is so beautiful and something I will forever admire. James was a blessing to all that knew him and because of his boldness to share his journey with the world so bravely is now a blessing to all.”

McComb concluded her lengthy, heartfelt tribute with a prayer and a final goodbye.

“God please hold Kimberly, his children, his family and everyone who is mourning his loss in your arms. You are the healer of all healers. Thank you Jesus for bringing this beautiful soul into the world and into all of our lives.”

“I love you James. I know you had a lot of loved ones up there welcoming you home. God bless you. Till we meet again you sweet soul you. Prayers up. James’ family meant everything to him please help cover them during this difficult season.”

She also shared a link to the family’s GoFundMe page, encouraging support for Kimberly and the children as they navigate life without him.

For McComb, the loss carries both sorrow and quiet gratitude. In her tribute, she remembered the man she loved long before the spotlight found him, before illness reshaped his path, and before the world knew him as a kind, gentle star.
