The Hallmark Channel now airs “Gilmore Girls,” and fans are thrilled. As the iconic show celebrates its 25th anniversary and its addition to Hallmark, star Kelly Bishop is reflecting on it all.
Bishop played family matriarch Emily Gilmore, the mother of Lauren Graham’s Lorelai Gilmore and grandmother of Alexis Bledel’s Rory Gilmore. She revealed in a chat with People that “Gilmore Girls” was immediately a favorite project of her career.
Kelly Bishop Thought ‘Gilmore Girls’ Was Funny & Intelligent
Bishop noted that even though “Gilmore Girls” wasn’t an immediate hit, she “always thought the show was a good show.” She felt “it was not only well-written, well-cast, but that it had a good heart.”
She also thought it was “very funny and quite intelligent.”
“Gilmore Girls” aired from 2000 to 2007, for seven seasons and a total of 153 episodes. In 2016, Netflix’s “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” brought Bishop, Graham, Bledel, and several others from the original cast back for a four-episode revival.
With the popularity of the show continuing to be strong, and episodes available via streaming, Bishop has found that “Gilmore Girls” is gaining new fans. She is now meeting fans who tell her they never watched before and who are in their “60s and 70s,” who are now realizing what a great show it is.
“It’s been really wonderful,” Bishop said of meeting new fans and watching the show’s popularity continue. She also noted she believes the show “hasn’t aged” and is still a great watch now 25 years later.
Bishop’s Favorite ‘Gilmore Girls’ Line Happened in the 1st Episode
Not only does Bishop still have a lot of love for the show, but she also continues to adore Graham in particular. She said Graham was her “dream girl” and the two continue to show up for one another as needed.
Ultimately, Bishop noted, she’s “delighted” that the show’s popularity has continued. “This has all been very pleasing to me,” she shared, in true Emily Gilmore fashion.
In a chat with News Nation about the show’s big anniversary, Bishop was asked a tough question. When trying to decide her favorite Emily line from the series, she decided it was one from the very first “Gilmore Girls” episode.
In the debut episode, Lorelai shows up at her parents’ home, and Emily opens the door. “Is it Easter already?” she asks. A bit later, when family patriarch Richard Gilmore (Edward Herrmann) walks in and sees Lorelai, he similarly asks if it’s Christmas already.
Bishop said, “Those two lines, that’s the brilliance of Amy Sherman-Palladino. In those two lines, you see how often this family gets together. It was brilliant.”
