Not long after HGTV star Jonathan Scott and actress Zooey Deschanel met while taping a 2019 “Carpool Karaoke” segment with James Corden, they began dating and eventually settled down together. The following year, they purchased and completely renovated a Los Angeles home for themselves and Deschanel’s two kids — Elsie, now 10, and Charlie, now eight — whom she shares with ex-husband Jacob Pechenik.
But while navigating life in L.A., the darling duo — who have been engaged since 2023 — took on another little-known home renovation project, purchasing a two-story New York City apartment that same year. On October 8, 2025, the couple opened the doors to their fully renovated Manhattan getaway, giving Architectural Digest a look at the meticulous design and decor in every inch of the gorgeous space.
Who Helped Jonathan Scott & Zooey Deschanel Design Their NYC Home?
To bring their visions to life while living across the country in L.A., Scott and Deschanel relied on New York contractor Artie Lange, whom HGTV fans may recognize from various “Property Brothers” projects, including 2017’s “Property Brothers Buying & Selling.”
The couple also teamed up with luxe interior designer Young Huh, named one of Architectural Digest’s top 100 creatives in 2024. The outlet noted she’s “known for her deft layering of historic European elements with fresh patterns, livable layouts, and romantic use of color.”
“Young is brilliant with maximalist style and she really got my aesthetic,” Deschanel told Architectural Digest. “It takes a lot of skill to mix patterns and textures and make them feel harmonious.”
Jonathan Scott & Zooey Deschanel Wanted ‘Nothing Modern’ in Their Apartment
Huh told the outlet that the celeb couple wanted “nothing modern,” hoping instead for ” a sense of history” and plenty of color. The result is an explosion of patterns, vibrant hues, vintage treasures and lighting that’s both quirky and elegant (Scott said recessed lighting was forbidden, joking that it was like a “swear word in our house”).
The entryway when guests step off the elevator, for instance, features whimsical, floor to ceiling wallpaper with brightly painted flowers, which Scott said allows them to “welcome our guests with something interesting, exciting.”
Along the next hallway is an enormous mural Deschanel called “so magical,” that Scott said is emphasized by high ceilings, custom moldings, and elegant, hanging lighting fixtures.
Zooey Deschanel Says Jonathan Scott’s Vision for Spaces is ‘Incredible’
“This place looked absolutely nothing like the way it does now,” Deschanel marveled to Architectural Digest, admitting that her first reaction to the space was “Ew, gross.”
Laughing, Scott said, “It had sat vacant for a long time and was in need of a lot of love. But a little vision goes a long way.”
In their video walkthrough, “before” shots of the apartment make the space unrecognizable compared to the finished design.
“Jonathan is incredible at maximizing space,” Deschanel told Architectural Design. “He looks at a floorplan and knows where the problem’s going to be.”
For example, she said, “The flow in this kitchen and living room is so wonderful,” and shared how they transformed a closet-sized kitchen into the heart of their home, with light blue cabinetry and stone countertops Scott said he’s “obsessed” with.
“The good thing is, like, you have so many contacts and you know, like, the best people to do everything,” Deschanel told Scott and then adorably added, “I’m so lucky because, like, I have you.”
