Keith Urban Surprises Fans With Unexpected New Sound

Keith Urban has surprised country music fans by debuting an unexpected new sound after more than three decades in the spotlight.

The former “American Idol” judge shared a tease of his latest LP, “Flow State,” at a Nashville, Tennessee, pop-up show in late April. The new LP is a collection of Urban’s favorite Yacht Rock songs, including one new tune alongside the legendary Michael McDonald titled, “We Go Back.”


Keith Urban Shared New Music at a Surprise Nashville Show

The former “American Idol” judge shared a short clip on Instagram from a performance of his latest song, “We Go Back.” The song is part of an LP collection of Urban’s favorite Yacht Rock tunes titled “Flow State.”

He captioned the video clip, “First time playing ‘We Go Back’ last night in Nashville. We’re in a flow state now !! Thank you to everyone who came out to The Mil last night.”

Urban referred to his surprise show on April 29, 2026, which teased the new track and LP. The intimate show featured new music and classic, laid-back tunes.

Fans shared their joy about the chance to hear some new Urban songs and listen to his own spin on some beloved classic tunes. They posted their remarks in the video’s comments section.

“Just an amazing, amazing night last night, Keith. People were walking away, just talking about loving every single song. During your performance last night, people were going, ‘Oh my God, I’m gonna love this album.’ You got us all into a ”Flow State” of peace and harmony,” wrote one follower.

A second fan penned, “You’re just a whole new you!!! Enjoying life everyday! Good for you.”

“What a perfect night!!! Already obsessed with this song. It was SO FUN LIVE,” declared a third Instagram user.

“This song has been on repeat since yesterday!” exclaimed a fourth Keith Urban fan.


‘Flow State’ Includes a Collection of Keith Urban’s Favorite Yacht Rock Songs

Keith Urban shared an Instagram post featuring the cover of “Flow State” and its complete track listing. He explained, “‘Flow State’ started as a fun little project and somehow turned into a full-fledged album.”

He added, “It features 10 covers of some of my all-time favorite yacht rock songs, along with incredible collaborations with John Mayer and Little Big Town, PLUS one original track, ‘We Go Back,’ with the legendary Michael McDonald. You can hear that one everywhere now, along with ‘Summer Breeze.'”

One of the LP’s first released tunes, a cover of “Summer Breeze,” was a tribute to the original, performed by Seals and Crofts. The song was initially released in August 1972.

According to The Tennessean, other songs on Urban’s newest LP include The album includes covers of songs like “Steal Away,” “Baby Come Back,” “Just the Two of Us,” “On and On” and “Summer Breeze.”

Collaborations include Little Big Town on “Magnet and Steel,” John Mayer on “Guitar Man,” and Michael McDonald on “We Go Back.”

Urban told PEOPLE Magazine, “I bought a studio in Nashville, and all I wanted to do was break it in by doing a song or two. And we thought, just for fun, we would do a couple of yacht rock songs. I had no intention of releasing it. It was just something to do that we really loved playing that kind of music.”

“Flow State” will be available for download on June 12. A vinyl LP will be released on July 10.
