“Having lost a cousin who was living with morbid obesity and watching what she had to go through and how she fought for her life, why would I not want to be a part of it?” she told People in an interview in May 2025. Latifah confessed to watching her cousin struggle with several cardiovascular issues and described the challenges that she saw her face. She spoke about how “obesity is a disease” and gave statistics on how many people in the United States are living with it. Her goal is simple: to raise awareness of obesity and help those struggling with weight loss by referring them to websites with useful information.
Latifah has been a powerful champion for better health, but she has also experienced the limited size options in fashion. “There are a lot of stylists who are carrying baggage [and want to say] if you are not a size 6 or less, or 8 or less, then you are difficult to dress. No, you just don’t know how to style me,” she told People. She revealed how stylists need to do a better job at dressing different body types. “It’s actually not us who needs to lose weight, it’s you who need to figure out how to dress us,” she concluded.
