A tense moment on the set of Netflix’s “Outer Banks” has sparked online conversation after video footage showed series co-creator and director Jonas Pate confronting a production assistant during filming, prompting actor Madelyn Cline to intervene.
The brief video, first circulated by TMZ and later reported by Page Six, shows Pate grabbing the arm of a female production assistant while appearing to reprimand her during a shoot in Dubrovnik, Croatia. As the exchange unfolds, Cline, who stars as Sarah Cameron on the series, stands up and approaches the director, raising her arm and speaking to him as the assistant walks away.
Though the video does not include audio, the visual alone has raised concerns about workplace conduct on high-profile television sets and has drawn attention to the role cast members can play when conflicts arise behind the scenes.
Video Captures on-Set Confrontation
The footage shows the production assistant moving through a crowded set when Pate reaches out and grabs her arm. Several crew members turn to watch the interaction. Seconds later, Cline steps in, positioning herself between the director and the assistant, who exits the frame.
According to The Express Tribune, the assistant appeared visibly shaken as she left the scene. The outlet also noted that the physical contact in the video appeared limited to an arm grab, though earlier reports described the encounter as more aggressive.
Page Six reported that sources familiar with the situation alleged Pate yelled at the assistant and shook her during the confrontation. Those sources said Cline and her co-star Chase Stokes intervened to de-escalate the situation. No injuries were reported.
Netflix has not commented publicly on the incident. Representatives for Pate, Cline, and Stokes have also not issued statements addressing the video or the allegations.
Cast Intervention Draws Attention
The incident has fueled broader discussion about power dynamics on film and television sets, particularly when senior creatives interact with junior crew members. Industry observers have pointed to Cline’s response as notable, highlighting how actors can use their visibility to step in when tensions escalate.
Cline has not spoken publicly about the moment. However, her decision to intervene has resonated with fans of the series, many of whom praised her actions across social media platforms after the footage circulated.
The confrontation occurred as “Outer Banks” films its fifth and final season. The Netflix series, which debuted in 2020, became a breakout hit by blending teen drama with action-adventure storytelling. Its success helped launch Cline into wider recognition, including film roles and major fashion campaigns.
For a show built on themes of loyalty, friendship, and standing up for one another, the off-camera moment struck a chord with viewers who saw those values play out in real time.
