Bette Midler just thrilled her fans by reuniting with her “Beaches” costar Barbara Hershey for a fun selfie. It’s hard to believe it’s been 37 years since the pair starred together in the fan-favorite Garry Marshall comedy drama.
Midler, 80, shared the snap on her Instagram on February 26 with the caption, “It’s a BEACHES reunion! Here I am with the great Barbara Hershey! We go back a-ways!!!” Fans were thrilled to see the duo back together again. One wrote, “My number 1 movie of all time! CC and Hillary reunited.” Another chimed in, “The movie that imprinted so many of us. Thank you and beautiful to see you two together.”
Barbara Hershey & Bette Midler Discussed Their On-Set Dynamic In a 1989 Interview
GettyIn a 1989 “Today” appearance to discuss “Beaches,” Hershey and Midler were asked whether they knew each other before making the film, and Midler recalled, “We had dinner once together at my house.” Hershey jumped in to laughingly clarify, “We had dinner once together with a hundred other people at her house. So we didn’t get to know each other.” Midler said she remembered that she sat next to Hershey, then a stranger, and the two “chatted a little bit.”
Midler then named what her character CC sees in Hershey’s Hillary, saying, “She’s a fabulous audience. The best CC’s ever had. And she’s the most devoted. And my character is a character who really needs an audience.
Midler went on to explain that CC “wants to play leader in her own limited way, and she’s found a real gullible person in this girl.”
When a question came up about whether the two actresses had similar work habits, Midler jested, “What work habits?” before Hershey disagreed, praising Midler’s dedication. She said, “I think you don’t give yourself credit for the work habits you have. I think you’re constantly thinking about it and dealing with it.”
Hershey then described what it was like being on set with the “Hocus Pocus” star, saying, “When she gets to set she’s very impetuous,” and compared the fun of working with Midler to a tennis match, or “running after a moving train.”
Bette Midler Recently Mourned Some Close Hollywood Contemporaries
Bette Midler’s cheery “Beaches” reunion with Barbara Hershey follows a fall and early winter of more somber posts. The actress mourned the loss of some of her fellow actresses and friends.
In November, she took to her Instagram account to remember Diane Ladd, who died November 3. Midler wrote, “She was the loveliest actress; it was a joy to watch her and wonderful to read her books, especially the last one, written by her daughter, Laura Dern, “Honey, Baby, Mine.”
Less than a month before Ladd’s death, Midler mourned another friend, Diane Keaton. She called the actress “hilarious” and a “complete original” in a post.
And in December, Midler fondly remembered slain “Stand by Me” director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele. She called Reiner “an excellent judge of character” and praised him for making “life on this planet a little less bleak and a lot more bearable” in a lengthy Instagram post.
