Adored actress Hayden Panettiere was living in fear of possible retaliation from former friends whom she considered “dangerous” in the months leading up to her August 16 death, a new TMZ report says.
The report, published on Tuesday, August 18, says the outlet has been told by sources that Hayden was apprehensive about the May 2026 release of her illuminating memoir, fearing she’d get “blowback” from “dangerous” former friends.
The report also notes the source indicated “she’d told people close to her she was nervous about publicly releasing details of her tortured past,” and was particularly worried about the bombshell revelation that an ex pal had tried to exploit her by placing her in a inappropriate and uncomfortable situation with an unnamed male singer during a yacht ride when she was just 18.
Hayden Panettiere Was Too Afraid to Name Troubling People in Her Book, Report Says
Per the report, TMZ’s source says the “My Hero is You” singer felt she “legally couldn’t name” several of the questionable people mentioned in her book, due to her fears about the danger they might pose.
Despite being encouraged by those in her close circle to name names for “accountability,” the starlet was too scared of the potential “repercussions,” the report notes. It does not describe specifically what Hayden feared those repercussions might be.
Additionally, TMZ says they were told by sources that “Hayden told friends it was torture revisiting the painful parts of her life for the book,” and omitted several troubling experiences she’s had with famous Hollywood names because she considered them “too disturbing to include.”
Hayden’s autopsy, which was completed Monday morning, did not uncover any signs of physical trauma that could have played into her death, officials revealed. The investigation remains open.
The Biggest Bombshells from Hayden Panettiere’s 2026 Memoir ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning’
The book in question is “This Is Me: A Memoir,” which the “Tiger Cruise” actress released on May 19, 2026. In it, she opens up about her painful past and some of the shocking experiences she went through as a young upcoming actress and then as an emotionally struggling mother.
In one alarming chapter, Hayden revealed she was once told by a doctor she’d be “dead in 5 years” if she continued her pattern of alcohol abuse. She says she became reliant on the substance to tune out her depression and trauma.
She also described the harrowing withdrawals she went though while trying to go sober during an 8-month treatment stay in 2020, saying she suffered insomnia, intense headaches, and uncontrollable shaking.
Hayden also shared that she was introduced to addictive substances at just 15 years old, when she was given “happy pills” by her team to keep her peppy in interviews.
Elaborating on the yacht incident which she mentioned during a May 11 appearance on Jay Shetty’s podcast, Hayden wrote that a friend escorted her “into a tiny room” and placed her into bed “beside an older celebrity” who was naked.
She says she was shocked by the incident because she had mistaken the person who pushed her into the situation as “a protector and somebody who had my back.” She fled the room and hid elsewhere on the boat after realizing what was going on, she recalls.
