This is the first sighting of MacLaine since the passing of her “Steel Magnolias” co-star, Dolly Parton. The country music legend’s death was announced on August 25. Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, released a video statement, posted on Parton’s official Instagram. It was later revealed that she had privately battled cancer before her death at age 80

MacLaine broke her silence on Parton’s passing, saying, “God sent her to us, and she has returned home,” People reports. The pair starred in the 1989 film, “Steel Magnolias,” which also starred Julia Roberts and Sally Field. In a statement, per People, she said, “Dolly was a magical and joyous human. I hold knowing her as a treasure in my life. The sun has dimmed today.”

In a 2019 interview with People, MacLaine revealed that she stays in contact with her former co-stars. “We check in with each other,” she said. “Not all the time, but we know what we’re doing.”

In the interview, MacLaine also praised Parton for never complaining. “She was the only one who didn’t complain about the heat,” she said. “And she was the one wearing the 10-inch heels and the waist cincher of 18 inches. And she never complained about a thing, and a wig that was huge!”

In a 1989 appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” Roberts reflected on what she had learned from Parton while filming. “Everyone had ice on their wrist and was doing the whole thing; everyone was like, ‘It’s hot, can I get some water?’ And I finally just had to say, ‘Dolly, I mean, you’ve got a wig and the wool. Come on, it’s hot, sweat a little, you know? Just say ‘I’m hot,’ you know. ‘This is a drag!’” Roberts said, People reports

She continued, “And she said — I remember we were sitting on the porch, do you remember this? And she said to me, ‘When I was a little girl, I wanted to be famous, and I wanted to be rich, and now I’m both those things. I’m not going to complain about it.’”

Dolly Parton’s Beautiful Life

Tributes have been pouring in for Parton since the announcement of her death. In a second announcement on Instagram, Parton’s family revealed her wishes and funeral plans. “At Dolly’s request, a small, private service will be held for immediate family,” the comment reads. “Dolly’s fans and friends from around the world are encouraged to pay tribute to Dolly on social media by tagging @DollyParton or by leaving a message at www.dollyparton.com. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library at www.imaginationlibrary.com.”
