From her days as Hannah Montana to a Grammy-winning musician, Miley Cyrus’s romantic life has been in the spotlight just as much as her music. While the former “The Voice” coach has been mostly forthcoming about her past relationships, after she and Liam Hemsworth divorced, she began to rethink her openness.
“What really sucked about it wasn’t the fact that me and someone that I loved realized that we don’t love each other the way that we used to anymore,” she said on the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast. “That’s okay, I can accept that. I can’t accept the villainizing and just all those stories.”
Nowadays, Miley is much more private about her relationship with Maxx Morando, her boyfriend of four years. She’s also realizing that her more mature decisions related to her love life are partly due to unlearning her mother’s advice.
Miley Cyrus Reflects on Love Lessons Learned the Hard Way
Miley, her sisters Brandi and Noah, and her mother, Tish, all sat down with The Cut in a rare group interview. At some point, the topic turned to things that they’ve had to learn the hard way. Noah and Miley’s answers were both centered around previous relationships.
“Mom’s always wanted me to stay with the wrong guy ’cause he’s hot,” Miley admitted.
When Tish reminded Miley that she’s now in a relationship with someone, “that’s friggin’ hot,” the “Flowers” singer corrected her.
“No, I ended up with a person who means a lot to me and treats me really well and respects me,” Miley said. “I had to learn that the hard way because my mommy taught me the wrong way and then I had to learn the right way by myself.”
Noah agreed, saying that she was “in the same boat” as her sister.
“I had to find someone who treats me with respect and then Mom never really put that on the top three of her must-haves,” Miley continued. “Mom was like, ‘They need to be tall.'”
The Cyruses Have Found the Perfect Balance of ‘Hot’ and Respectful Love
While Miley has finally found the perfect combination of respectful and “hot” in her relationship, Tish seems to have unlearned her own advice, as well. Miley pointed out that, with her marriage to actor Dominic Purcell two years ago, she has also “found someone that is hot and respects her.”
Despite the Cyruses realizing that it has taken them a while to learn the importance of respecting each other in a relationship, it has never been a problem in their relationships with one another.
“One thing I’ve always loved about our family is that we’re very honorable and respectful of each other’s differences,” Miley acknowledged. “I think a lot of families get torn apart from their differences.”
