Keith Urban on Issue That ‘Blew Our Marriage to Smithereens’
During a speech honoring Kidman at the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala in April 2024, Urban touched on a rocky time in their marriage.
“We got married in June 2006 and barely four months into our marriage, my addictions … that I’d done really nothing about, blew our marriage to smithereens,” he shared.
Urban had a three-month stay in rehab just months into their marriage. The situation left him feeling uncertain that Kidman would stay with him.
“Four months into a marriage, I’m in rehab for three months. I had no idea what was going to happen to us … and if you want to see what love in action really looks like, give that a whirl,” Urban said. “Nic pushed through every negative voice, I’m sure even some of her own, and she chose love.”
The singer added, “And here we are tonight, 18 years later.”
Later in the speech, Urban shared, “She also has a bit of a mantra and that is, ‘choose love.’ And I’ve watched her do this many times, navigating emotionally complex things that she’s gone through with so many people. She always chooses that phrase. She lives by it. Choose love.”
“She has a capacity to love like no one I’ve ever met,” he added. “Next year will be 20 years that I’ve been madly in love with you.”
Keith Urban & Nicole Kidman Recently Celebrated Their Wedding Anniversary
Just three months before announcing their split, Kidman took to Instagram on June 25 to celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary.
“Happy Anniversary Baby ❤️ @KeithUrban,” she wrote in the caption. In the black and white photo, the pair sweetly smile as they cuddle up in a dressing room.
Urban commented with a red heart emoji. He didn’t post an anniversary tribute on his Instagram account, however.
The country singer’s last post with Kidman was on May 9, when Urban took to Instagram to celebrate their night at the Academy of Country Music Awards.
“TRIPLE CROWN !!! it was a surreal feeling and truly humbling honor to be recognized at the @acmawards last night, and a triple-sized, massive thank you to @megmoroney, @chrisstapleton, and @brothersosborne for your insanely inspired performances last night during the show,” he wrote in the caption. “I LOVED every second of it!!!”
In his ACM Awards speech, he first thanked his family. “My wife, Nicole Mary, is here tonight. I love you, babygirl,” Urban said. “And our girls Sunday and Faith watching at home tonight, I love you both, too.”
