Quentin Tarantino has no plans to hand over any of his fortune to his mother. The 63-year-old director has never forgiven his mother for doubting his ambitions as a child. Fortune recently estimated Tarantino’s net worth at $150 million. The outlet also resurfaced a 2021 interview of the director where he vehemently claimed he would never share any of his earnings with his mother.
Connie Zastoupil was a teenager when she gave birth to Quentin Tarantino. His father is the then-aspiring actor Tony Tarantino, with whom Quentin never had a relationship. The Oscar-winning filmmaker grew up with his own writing aspirations, but Zastoupil discouraged him.
Now, Tarantino has claimed he has made good on his promise to never reward his mother for not believing in him. Furthermore, Tarantino has maintained he will not even share “a penny” with her.
Quentin Tarantino Vowed To Never Provide Financially To His Mother
Quentin Tarantino’s mother worked as a nurse to provide for him. Connie Zastoupil raised her son as a single parent after Tony Tarantino divorced her and left the family. Connie’s maiden name is McHugh. She was then briefly married to Curtis Zastoupil. Her second husband accompanied Quentin to film screenings, which contributed to his passion for writing.
Although Connie allowed her son to watch films mature for his age, she wasn’t supportive of his ambitions. In 2021, Tarantino told host Brian Koppelman on “The Moment” podcast that one pivotal exchange forever left him embittered with his mother. At the age of 12, Tarantino gave a poor performance at school, for which he was scolded by Connie.
According to him, her attitude toward him led Tarantino to vow that she would never benefit from his success. The 63-year-old said that Connie told him that his “little writing career” was “over” because of his struggles at school.
“And when she said that to me in that sarcastic way, I was in my head, and I go, ‘Okay, lady, when I become a successful writer, you will never see one penny from my success,” Tarantino recalled on the podcast. “There will be no house for you. There’s no vacation for you. No Elvis Cadillac for mommy. You get nothing because you said that.'”
Quentin Tarantino Has Only Ever Helped His Mother Financially Once
Quentin Tarantino largely stayed true to his promise. The “Pulp Fiction” director said he never gave his mother a “penny” out of his filmmaking earnings. Tarantino only ever provided assistance to Connie when she had an issue with the IRS.
“I helped her out of a jam with the IRS, but no house,” he said. “No Cadillac.”
According to Tarantino, the main reason for his lack of support comes from wanting his mother to deal with the consequences of her actions. Her words hit the director hard as a child, and he decided to stay true to his promise. He elaborated further on why it remained important to him to avoid sharing any of his personal fortune with Connie.
There are consequences for your words as you deal with your children,” he said on “The Moment” podcast. “Remember, there are consequences for your sarcastic tone about what’s meaningful to them.”
For her part, Connie doesn’t have any resentment toward her son. In a statement to USA Today shortly after Tarantino’s interview, the 80-year-old reaffirmed her love for her son. She also said she would not participate in the “media frenzy.”
“I support him, I’m proud of him and love him and his growing new family,” said Connie’s statement. “It gave me great joy to dance at his wedding and receive his news upon the birth of my grandson Leo.”
