Country star Lainey Wilson revealed the hilarious lie she told while on her first date with fiancé Devlin “Duck” Hodges!
In a candid interview with Southern Living, Lainey confessed that she told Hodges people called her “Goose” — a playful lie she invented to match his famous nickname.
Surprisingly, it worked: “He fell for it,” she recalled, adding that she thinks he must’ve thought, “Oh, I’m in love.”
Duck’s own nickname, by contrast, has a more grounded origin. It came from his college football coach, who compared him to another talented quarterback nicknamed “Duck,” and soon the moniker stuck among teammates.
Despite her playful fib, Wilson’s honesty in admitting it now only adds to their charm as a couple who doesn’t take themselves too seriously.
Wilson & Hodges’ Relationship Timeline
The two met in 2021 and kept their relationship mostly private before stepping into the public eye in 2023.
In February 2025, they announced their engagement — a milestone fans had waited for.
Before Wilson was engaged, she dished to Country Living on what she wanted in a ring.
“I don’t care what shape it is, but I want to be walking with a limp,” she jokingly said.
While Wilson had an idea about what ring she wanted, she told PEOPLE in August that she hasn’t done much as far as wedding details.
“I need to go dress shopping or I need to talk to somebody about making a dress,” she told the outlet. “I need to go get fitted. How about that? That’s the first step.”
Though Wilson is known for her iconic bell bottoms, she did add that she will be wearing a dress.
The “Somewhere Over Laredo” singer added she’s very excited about the upcoming nuptials.
“I’m excited to just step outside of the box and see what happens,” Wilson continued.
She hopes that her fiancé will be “boohooing” when he sees her walk down the aisle.
Wilson Dishes on Who’s Cooking
Wilson also admitted that cooking isn’t her strong suit — but Hodges doesn’t seem to mind.
She said her family can cook, but she didn’t receive that skill.
“I could mess up Hot Pockets. I mean, it’s really that bad,” she added. “My fiancé definitely likes me for a lot of other reasons, because if he was dependent on my cooking, he’d be gone by now.”
Wilson added that Hodges is great when in the kitchen.
“He can cook. He’s an Alabama boy, so he knows how to whip it up,” Wilson said.
