Lil Nas X is mourning the loss of his mother, sharing the news in an emotional post on Instagram.
“RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY. this one’s gonna hurt. 🥹🥹,” he captioned the post, which included three photos of his mother.
The rapper hasn’t spoken publicly much about his relationship with his mother, but in a 2021 interview with Hot 97, he mentioned that it was “strained,” adding that she’s an addict and he was trying to get her help.
“But y’all (expletive) don’t know how many nights I’ve cried myself to sleep feeling guilty because nothing I tried would help my mom.” He explained, “Paint me as the bad guy all you want, but at the end of the day, you don’t know me outside of this internet (expletive).
“She’s an addict, so we don’t have the closest relationship. Even trying to get her better – things didn’t quite work out. But there’s still love…”
Her passing comes one year after Lil Nas X was arrested in Los Angeles. He ultimately accepted a mental health diversion program after his motion was accepted by a judge. He has since been open about his struggles, specifically regarding his bipolar diagnosis, and continues to get help.

Lil Nas X Has Been Open About His Own Mental Health Struggles
Following his arrest and treatment plan, Lil Nas X returned to social media in June.
“I’ve been in rehab for a few months and since then, I’ve been back at home whether it’s in Atlanta with my family or in Los Angeles with myself, friends and what not, and trying to ground myself down to earth and get out of my head,” he said in a June Instagram video. “I have a therapist now and a psychiatrist, which has been really helpful when I got my bipolar disorder diagnosis.”
He has since been open, and in a video shared on his Instagram story on Monday, August 24, Lil Nas X celebrated a major accomplishment.
“So, tomorrow is my 10,000th day alive and … I made it!” he said. “A lot of y’all won’t make it but I made it.”
“Ever since I got out of rehab, everybody’s, like, [so] nice to me. I could be like ‘Hey’ and everybody’s going to be like ‘Oh my God, you’re so brave,’” he shared in another update on Tuesday, August 25. “I can try to post a thirst trap on my Instagram Story, and then it’s going to be somebody like, ‘Keep fighting King.’”
