Derek Hough Applauds Robert Irwin’s ‘Incredible Journey’ After Emotional DWTS Win

Derek Hough is celebrating Robert Irwin’s unforgettable rise to “Dancing with the Stars” champion.
After Irwin and partner Witney Carson won the Season 34 Mirrorball Trophy, Hough posted an emotional tribute on Instagram, calling it “an honor” to witness Irwin’s journey.

Derek, who previously won the Mirrorball with Robert’s sister Bindi Irwin in Season 21, said watching Robert create his own legacy on the same stage felt especially meaningful.

“Robert, I just want to say it’s been such an honor to witness this journey,” Hough wrote. “I remember that 11-year-old boy, about a decade ago, jumping up and down and cheering on his big sister. And now here you are, carving out your own incredible story on this stage.”

Hough said Irwin’s impact went far beyond dance scores. “I truly believe that your family’s legacy isn’t just about wildlife conservation,” he continued.

“It’s also about showing the world how to move through life with so much joy, gratitude, enthusiasm, and class. Watching you embody all of that this season has been a true privilege.”

He added, “Congratulations, what a season, what a legacy you’re continuing to build.”

Inside Robert Irwin’s Winning Night on ‘DWTS’

Irwin’s victory capped one of the most competitive finales in recent “DWTS” history. On November 25, finalists Irwin, Alix Earle, Dylan Efron, Elaine Hendrix, and Jordan Chiles returned to the dance floor for three rounds of high-stakes performances.

Round 1: Judges’ Assignments

The finale opened with dance styles chosen by the judges. Alix Earle delivered a standout Samba and earned a perfect 30/30.

Elaine Hendrix matched her score with an elegant Rumba. Robert Irwin impressed with a sharp, quickstep that scored 29/30, while Jordan Chiles earned the same score for a powerful Paso doble. Dylan Efron closed the round with a strong Paso doble that landed at 28/30.

Round 2: New Styles Learned on the Spot

The second round tested how quickly the finalists could pick up new choreography. Alix scored another perfect 30/30 with a clean cha-cha-cha.

Irwin tied her with a high-energy cha-cha-cha that pushed him up the leaderboard. Dylan earned 30/30 for a polished foxtrot, and Jordan followed with a commanding tango that also scored 30/30. Elaine completed the round with a 27/30 for her quickstep.

Round 3: The Freestyle Finale
The emotional freestyle round closed out the night, giving each dancer one last chance to leave everything on the floor. When scores were tallied, Alix finished with 90, Dylan with 88, Robert with 89, Elaine with 87, and Jordan with 89.

Irwin and Carson ultimately claimed the Mirrorball Trophy, winning both judge scores and America’s vote.
