For “Dancing With the Stars” star Derek Hough, everything seems to be going his way. After winning six Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophies during his 15 years as a pro dancer on the show, he became a judge in 2020. In 2023, he married fellow dancer Hayley Erbert, and the happy couple announced their pregnancy in July 2025.
And then, Hough announced his exciting new gig: host of “Extra.” So far, he’s been getting a lot of playful and encouraging feedback. While interviewing Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon on his second day, the two were thrilled to see Derek behind the camera and went above and beyond to support the new host.

On “Extra,” Jennifer and Reese immediately began screaming in excitement when they saw that it was Derek on the other end of the video call. They then lamented that they weren’t in the same room with him.
“Oh, we should be in the studio with you so that you could dance with us,” Jennifer replied.
“By the way, I was just going to ask you, I was talking to the casting director,” Derek said. “They said that you both have agreed to be on next season of “Dancing With the Stars. Is that true?”
They explained that they’d be among the audience clapping for the dancers, before they settled on being guest judges.
“You’ve heard it here first, guest judge next season, it’s done,” Derek told the camera. He then told them exactly how new he was to “Extra.”
“Guys, listen, I’m brand new to this job, as you can probably tell,” he said. “You guys have more experience as news anchors than I do,” referring to their Apple TV+ series, “The Morning Show.”
“I didn’t even know you were on this show,” Jennifer admitted, laughing.
“I know,” Derek replied. “No, this is literally, like, my second day. I’m not even kidding.”
“It is?” They both exclaimed, before Reese reassuringly told him, “You’re doing great.”
“You’re doing so good!” Jennifer added.
Derek thanked them for their words and then asked them how he should introduce himself and the show, to which Jennifer gave him an example.
“That was it,” Reese confirmed. “I mean, you can’t do better than that.”

Derek’s very first interview was with Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie for their new film, “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.” He admitted to Entertainment Weekly that they are two actors he’s in awe of.
“My very first interview, I’m not going to lie, I was absolutely starstruck,” he confesses. “I was a little mortified and terrified because I love them both so much.”
Afterwards, he posted an Instagram video showing Colin playfully teasing him.
“You did terrible, terrible,” he told Derek, while Margot laughingly agreed.
“Back to the desk board,” Derek replied.
