“Dancing with the Stars” Season 34 held its finale a week ago, and the final five celebrity competitors and their professional dancers made the show truly unforgettable. One of the dances that stood out on the night was Jordan Chiles and Ezra Sosa’s Freestyle performance, and there has been a lot of hype surrounding it in the week since the finale.
Fans have celebrated the Freestyle for being a powerful performance, and the judges agreed. However, former DWTS pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy had less complimentary things to say.
Maksim Chmerkovskiy Reacts to Jordan Chiles & Ezra Sosa’s Freestyle
Chmerkovskiy delivered his verdict on Soza and Chiles’ performance during an appearance on Peta Murgatroyd’s “The Penthouse With Peta” podcast. Murgatroyd started the discussion with praise for the pair. “I love that she came out. She gave us a freaking hip hop crumping, whatever you want to call it,” she said. “And I’m here for it. I want to see it. She laid it all out. And I was taken aback.”
“It was just a good hip-hop, it was not a good freestyle,” Chmerkovskiy said. “Freestyle can be anything and I’ve also done big mistakes in the finale thinking that my hip-hop and crump is going to take it down, but it’s not. This was a great hip-hop routine that was not a good freestyle dance for ‘Dancing With the Stars’ finale trying to win the show.”
Both Chmerkovskiy and Murgatroyd agreed that Sosa should have been in the routine more, rather than Normani, who danced next to Chiles for a significant portion of it.

Ultimately, Murgatroyd disagreed with her husband’s comments about how it was not a good Freestyle, and she was not the only one. The comment on the YouTube video has fans rallying around Sosa and Chiles. “Jordan swayed me with her freestyle…just sayin. OBSESSED,” a comment reads.
“I thought the jordan and ezra’s freestyle was beyond great. That is the only dance i have seen on YT several times,” another person wrote. “The choreography was so great it showed off jordan’s best dance hands down my favorite. This could have been a half time show for the superbowl it was that dynamic so great.”
It was not all negative for Chmerkovskiy, though, and some fans feel that his comments on DWTS in general would make him a great judge on the show. “Maks we need you at the judges table PLEASE!!!” a comment reads. “I have loved watching these every week sad that there coming to an end. I hope you continue doing these next season because they have been great,” another fan shared.
“Thank you both so much for amazing and honest comments during the whole season,” a third fan shared.
This is not the first controversial thing Chmerkovskiy has said about this season. He previously made comments about pro Jan Ravnik’s abilities as he joined the show for his debut season. Many fans felt that Chmerkovskiy’s comments were unkind and harsh, and when Ravnik responded, he remained professional, choosing to ignore what was said about him and focus on the positives.
