Hallmark‘s “When Calls the Heart” has brought in several new faces recently, thanks to the fire that displaced many residents from the nearby town of Benson Hills. But there’s one character who, even though she arrived last season, we’re still trying to figure out. That would be Edie Martell, played by Miranda MacDougall.
While Edie is still somewhat of a mystery, there’s at least one Hope Valley resident who is interested in learning more about the lawyer: Lucas Bouchard (Chris McNally). With the loss of her ranch and home, she’s been sleeping in Lucas’s office, which has meant the two have been spending even more time together. MacDougall has a few thoughts about what may be in store for the pair and their “two steps forward, one step back” relationship.
MacDougall Teases ‘Two Steps Forward, One Step Back’ Relationship Arc Ahead
During a Podcaster Junket interview with “Hallmarkies Podcast,” MacDougall mentioned the ending of Episode 4, when there was “a moment of connection” between Edie and Lucas. This was an important moment after he failed to appear at a town meeting after promising to be there.
“These characters are always, you know, with their relationship, it feels like two steps forward, one step back, two steps forward, one step back,” MacDougall said. “And I love that, because it mimics so many relationships in real life.”
“There’s going to be a couple bumps, and there are going to be maybe some moments of conversation and forgiveness,” she added. “And I think we can look forward to a little bit of vulnerability on both ends, which is exciting.”
‘When Calls the Heart’ Fans React to Arrival of Edie’s Ex-Fiancé
“When you introduce a new character, there’s going to be some folks who love the new character and who love the pending matchups, and there’s going to be other people who don’t,” MacDougall admitted. Fortunately, Hearties have already begun rooting for Edie and Lucas. When a teaser for Episode 6 showed Edie’s ex-fiancé in town, fans weren’t happy.
“I’m waiting for the first Edie and Lucas kiss but they bring back the ex💔,” commented one fan. “It better be a 1 episode appearance!”
“I thought we’d get closer to a first kiss for Edie and Lucas in the new episode!” Wrote another fan. “But then her ex comes back now? Ahhhh. So when will Edie and Lucas kiss finally? Episode 10 maybe? 😍🙏”
For his part, McNally thinks there’s something different about Edie compared to his previous relationship with Elizabeth (Erin Krakow). He believes that there’s a lot of potential for the blossoming couple.
“I feel like Edie challenges Lucas in certain ways that Elizabeth didn’t,” he told Good Housekeeping. “You know, it’s just a different dynamic between the two characters, and I enjoy that about the two of them.”
