“Fixer Upper” star Chip Gaines if offering his tried and true business advice away for free.
The former HGTV star set up a makeshift booth at the family’s Magnolia Silos in Waco, Texas, to give visitors a chance to ask for some “Pretty Good Advice.”
What he said next could help anyone hoping to start a business of their own.
Chip’s Advice
One couple sat down at Chip’s booth to ask for advice on growing their business.
“We were so inspired by you and Joanna, that back in 2020, we pretty much sold everything and bought a raw piece of land in Johnson City, Texas,” the wife explained in a video shared via YouTube on Monday, August 31.
The husband jumped in to explain that over the last six years, they have built seven cottages and an event space on the property.
“We’ve done 95 percent of the work ourselves,” he said before asking for hiring advice and “what to look for”.
Chip went on to explain that he and wife Joanna started with just one employee when they kick-started their brand in the early 2000s. Now, with a successful shopping district, multiple TV shows, a hotel, restaurant and more, the couple employees more than 600 people.
“You guys already know the answer to that question. You really do. Your heart will lead you to that perfect hire and it requires practice just like anything else,” Chip shared. “Jo and I were sitting in exactly your same shoes. And I just remember us saying, ‘We’re going to hire this office manager,’ because so much of both of our time was about paying bills, answering the phone calls. But y’all, it’s the most fascinating thing you’ll ever see in your life.”
He added, “You hire that person to do those things and all of a sudden magically you both are more available to do the things that the business needs that really require your personal attention, right? And so we hired this person and that next year we made more money than we did the year before.”
Career Goals
The Magnolia Network owners have come a long way since the debut of their iconic HGTV series in 2013. Chip recently achieved a lifelong goal after a donation to his beloved Baylor University baseball team saw the school rename the ballpark after the Gaineses.
“It’s an honor and a privilege… really to be honest, a lifelong dream to partner with @BaylorBaseball!!” the couple shared via Instagram in January. “We are incredibly proud to introduce @Magnolia Field at Baylor Ballpark!”
The field, now called Magnolia Field at Baylor Ballpark, will permanently bear the marking along the first baseline.
“The consistent presence and generosity of Chip and Joanna through their time and resources have been invaluable to Baylor University over these past 12 years,” Baylor President Linda A. Livingstone said, according to KXXV. “We celebrate this gift, which will help us to widen our welcome and offer unique experiences for fans of all ages. We look forward to cheering for Baylor Baseball at Magnolia Field this spring.”
