Beloved HGTV star David Bromstad is known for his jovial, over-the-top demeanor. However, he’s certainly had his share of struggles.

As the “My Lottery Dream Home” star celebrates his birthday, he’s reflecting on his sobriety journey. The situation hasn’t always been easy, but he knows there are many people in his corner who want him to succeed.

David Bromstad Celebrated His Birthday Surrounded By Loved Ones

David Bromstad happily celebrated his 53rd birthday this August.

On social media, the “My Lottery Dream Home” star expressed thankfulness on Instagram for the birthday getaway. He credited excellent friends and sobriety with his success.

“🎂 Birthday perfection! What an incredible week in Ptown! Another trip around the sun and the gratitude is enormous,” David Bromstad shared how thankful he was for his birthday celebration.

“It’s been an incredible year of building, reflection, authentic connections, celebration and pure magic. The blessing and gifts I’ve received this year is beyond comprehension,” he added.

“Sobriety has brought the most yummy life I was always meant to live. Feels great being 53 and loving every part and version of myself. The friends I have cultivated because of that clarity has been authentically delicious,” the HGTV star continued before giving his friends special shout outs.

The Designer Credits HGTV With Helping Him Through Life’s Toughest Battles

David Bromstad’s beloved Florida home took a heavy hit when the property experienced flood damage. The HGTV star began working on proper renovations, but the process took a monumental strain on his well-being. He took a break and traveled to Norway to find himself again.

HGTV documented the process in a special, “My Lottery Dream Home: David’s Happy Ending,” which aired on the network in December 2025. David Bromstad candidly spoke about his battle against addiction onscreen.

“It was important for me to open up about the reality of my life,” he bravely told TV Insider. “I have a very blessed and incredible life, and I do know this. But it doesn’t negate the fact that I’ve had really hard times in my existence.”

“I only allowed people to see the bright and shiny parts of me because that was all I was willing to accept from myself. So, to tell my honest and unapologetically unique story has been something I’ve been looking forward to, but I didn’t want to rush it, and I wanted it to be at the right time,” Bromstad added.

The HGTV network has been so much more than an employer for the designer. It’s also been his “biggest champion.”

“They celebrated me being gay when I didn’t even celebrate it myself,” David Bromstad told the outlet, noting that he was on television when it wasn’t normal to be openly gay in the media. “It was because of HGTV that I was able to accept that version of myself that there was nothing to be ashamed of. And for them to wrap their arms around me during this very real time of my life has been such a blessing. HGTV always continues to surprise me with the encouragement of authenticity, even when it isn’t pretty.”
