Karen E. Laine became a household name alongside her daughter, Mina Starsiak Hawk, thanks to their hugely popular HGTV series, “Good Bones.” However, since the show’s finale in 2023, fans have not been given an update on what Karen has been up to.
‘Good Bones’ Star Karen E. Laine Stepped Back From Home Renovations
After “Good Bones” came to an end in 2023, Laine stepped back from home renovations and the company she shared with her daughter, Two Chicks and a Hammer, to enjoy retired life.
“I’m not working for a paycheck anymore,” she said during an episode of the “Good Bones” spinoff, “Good Bones: New Beginnings” in August 2024. “I retired in 2019, and I can do anything I want. I’ve been doing everything I want to do. I’ve been doing some landscaping projects. I’ve been doing some lawyering.”
Just one year later, however, it seemed retired life grew to be too slow for the 63-year-old as she announced she was returning to practicing law.
“I have been a lawyer for over 30 years, and was on HGTV’s ‘Good Bones’ for 9 seasons. Followers are used to seeing my crafting and home improvement content, which I will continue to post, but there will be some changes because I am excited to be joining Josiah Swinney to restart my criminal defense practice,” she shared via Instagram in May 2025. “When asked if it was hard to transition from law to home renovation, I explain the similarities: I meet people charged with a crime or a run down house on their worst day.”
She continued, “It is my job to understand what went wrong, and then use my skills to turn the story in a new direction. As an attorney, I am committed to protecting the constitutional rights of people charged with crimes.”
Karen E. Laine and Mina Starsiak Hawk Had a Falling Out
Following the end of their 8-season run on “Good Bones,” Starsiak Hawk launched her podcast, “Mina AF.” The Indiana native detailed her falling out with her mother.
“My mom and I aren’t in a great place,” she told her podcast listeners in August 2023. “My brother Tad and I aren’t in a great place. My brother William and I are in a kind-of-like-nonexistent place. It’s complicated without even being complicated. We don’t really engage much and the last engagement wasn’t super-positive, and that was maybe a year ago.”
She later revealed that she and Laine were working on mending their relationship after realizing how “dysfunctional” her upbringing was.
“What I do love is, like, the sense of adventure that it felt like we got to have,” Mina said in April 2024. “And so how can I do that (for my kids)? But in a way that’s, like, way more safe and reasonable, and I wouldn’t called by, you know, DCS (Department of Children’s Services).”
