New HGTV Show Teases ‘Sneaky’ Surprises for Unsuspecting Homeowners

A new HGTV show coming in September is shaping up to be the network’s sneakiest series yet. See who stars in “House Shock,” including an HGTV competition winner, and what’s in store for unsuspecting homeowners.

‘House Shock’ Comes to HGTV in September 2026

On August 26, the HGTV Instagram account shared an announcement about a new series with a fun twist premiering in September.

“Host and designer Arielle Vandenberg and renovation expert/former #BattleOnTheBeach champ Steve Lewis are joining forces to deliver life-changing room transformations … without the homeowner knowing a thing! 😲” the caption shared.

“The all-new series #HouseShock premieres Sept. 22 at 9|8c,” the caption added.

According to the HGTV press release, “Sneaky loved ones will nominate unsuspecting homeowners for secret room makeovers in HGTV’s new covert renovation series ‘House Shock.'”

Vandenberg and Lewis will “help pull off surprise overhauls of spaces the recipients have dreamed of updating, whether neglected, abandoned or just plain despised.”

Vandenberg gets “design inspiration from the nominating family member” and works to find “the perfect pieces on the fly,” while Lewis and a construction team work on the renovation project.

“With only days to complete the remodel, the duo will recruit neighbors, friends and coworkers for elaborate cover stories and clever distractions to keep the homeowner in the dark,” HGTV shared. “At the dramatic reveal, the recipient will find out what was happening right under their nose and get the ultimate house shock from the stunning transformation.”

“Everyone loves surprises, right? But what about a surprise renovation?” Vandenberg shared. “We sneak in, race against the clock, try not to get caught and find out if the surprise pays off.”

According to Lewis, there are challenges involved with trying to be both quick and secretive.

“We only have a few days to get the work done, so we have to be quick, clean and quiet, which is hard to do on a construction site,” he explained. “But it’s worth it in the end to give these homeowners the renovation surprise of a lifetime.”

The season will include renovations of home offices, bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms, and three-season spaces. The team will face their fair share of obstacles, with the need to “dodge security cameras and navigate unforeseen challenges, including inclement weather, delivery delays and hidden issues behind the walls.”
