Ty Pennington Reveals the Choice That Changed His Life 25 Years Ago: ‘Immensley Grateful’

Over the last 25 years, Ty Pennington has become synonymous with meaningful home makeovers. The exuberant designer and host has been part of some of the most iconic renovation shows, from ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” to TLC’s “Trading Spaces” to his current hit, HGTV’s “Rock the Block.”

All of that success boils down to one audition he decided to show up for, Pennington shared via social media on November 30, 2025. Jumping on the current trend in which people share a move they made in their 30s that changed their lives, Pennington wrote over footage from his years of TV shows, “In your 30s, you’ll get a call to audition for a TV show…it’s VERY important that you go.”

Ty Pennington Thought His Days in Entertainment Were Over After Scary Crash

The star’s rise to fame came just after he thought his days of smiling for the camera were over. On a 2018 episode of former HGTV personality Jen Hatmaker’s “For the Love” podcast, Pennington said after being injured in a scary car accident that required “staples in my head,” his work as a model ended and he returned to an old passion of making furniture and working in construction.

Pennington figured his time in front of cameras was over. But to his surprise, he told Hatmaker, “Like six months later, after they knew that I’d given up on that, my agency called and said, ‘Hey, there’s seriously an audition. [A show is] looking for a carpenter who actually knows what he’s doing.'”

“And that’s when I went on this audition,” Pennington said of trying out for “Trading Spaces,” which would go on to become a massive hit. “And I honestly didn’t care if I got the job or not, because I had a kitchen I had to finish. And that’s how you get a job. You show up and you really don’t care whether or not you get it. And it’s so weird, because the minute you don’t want the job is the minute they offer it to you. It’s so funny.”

On November 30, Pennington captioned his post, “And 25 years later here we are!! So immensely grateful for that opportunity and all the projects I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of🙏🏼”

Fans and industry friends flooded Pennington’s post with compliments, thanking him for 25 years of inspiration and insights, including one who wrote, “You are a national treasure, good sir 🙌❤️”

“You taught me and therefore taught my boys how to renovate and diy with humour and compassion,” someone else wrote. “I owe you our entire home ❤️”

Another person shared, “Ty was my role model going good through school. Having adhd and dyslexia myself, school was hard. My mom showed me the story of when Ty opened up about his struggles and how he got through it. I “pulled up my boot straps” and got to work. I am an engineer now 🙌🙌🙌”

Although Pennington’s “Battle on the Beach” was canceled by HGTV earlier this year, his series “Rock the Block” is still going strong as one of the network’s most popular shows. He just wrapped filming season seven, which will premiere in 2026.
